Tanjirō Kamado, eldest son of a charcoal-selling family, sees his life shattered when the demon Muzan Kibutsuji massacres his kin. Only his sister Nezuko survives, transformed into a demon. This tragedy fuels his mission to join the Demon Slayer Corps—avenging his family and seeking a cure for Nezuko. His appearance features ruffled black hair with burgundy tips, dark red eyes, and a forehead scar from childhood that evolves into a flame-like Demon Slayer Mark. He wears ancestral hanafuda earrings and a checkered black-and-green haori over his uniform, carrying a wooden box to shield Nezuko from sunlight.
Profoundly kind and empathetic, Tanjirō extends compassion even to demons he battles, acknowledging their lost humanity while eliminating threats. His determination and fierce justice ignite controlled fury against irredeemable evils like Muzan or demons harming innocents. Experiences harden his resolve, refining his strategy and decisiveness in combat, yet his core empathy persists—consoling dying demons and prioritizing others' protection.
Trained by Sakonji Urokodaki, Tanjirō masters Water Breathing swordsmanship. During a fight with Lower Rank Five Rui, he recalls his father Tanjūrō’s ritual dance, the Hinokami Kagura (Dance of the Fire God), adapting it into combat rooted in the original Sun Breathing. This becomes central to his prowess. He awakens his Demon Slayer Mark battling Upper Rank Six, enhancing his physical abilities. Later, he accesses the "Transparent World," perceiving biological processes like blood flow, and achieves the "Selfless State," erasing his fighting spirit to evade demon detection.
In *Mugen Train*, Tanjirō and allies aid Flame Hashira Kyōjurō Rengoku against Lower Rank One Enmu. Trapped in dreams of his deceased family, Tanjirō heeds a vision of his father urging him to "slice" his dream self awake. Nezuko severs the dream links, enabling Tanjirō to behead Enmu—though the demon fuses with the train. Tanjirō destroys Enmu’s neckbone using Hinokami Kagura. When Upper Rank Three Akaza mortally wounds Rengoku, Tanjirō’s rage at Akaza’s escape marks his growth, declaring Rengoku victor for protecting all passengers.
Later, confronting Muzan in a final battle, Tanjirō is poisoned and near death. Ancestral memories reveal Sun Breathing’s origins. To survive, Muzan transforms him into a demon, granting regeneration, slit pupils, and additional flame marks. As a demon, he attacks indiscriminately but resists harming Nezuko. Reverted to human, he suffers permanent injuries: blindness in his right eye and a withered, immobile left arm regenerated during his demon state. He survives, continuing his legacy through descendants.
