Description
Tanjiro Kamado, eldest son of a Taisho-era mountain charcoal burner family, shoulders responsibility for his mother and five younger siblings—Nezuko, Takeo, Hanako, Shigeru, and Rokuta—after his father Tanjuro succumbs to illness. While Tanjiro sells charcoal, the demon Muzan Kibutsuji slaughters his family, sparing only Nezuko, whom he transforms into a demon. This tragedy drives Tanjiro to train under former Water Hashira Sakonji Urokodaki and join the Demon Slayer Corps, seeking vengeance and a cure for Nezuko.
Tanjiro possesses ruffled black hair with burgundy tips, dark red eyes, and a prominent forehead burn scar earned shielding Takeo from a falling kettle. He wears hanafuda earrings inherited from his father and the Demon Slayer uniform topped by a black-and-green checkered haori. His physical abilities encompass exceptional strength, endurance, and a heightened sense of smell that detects emotions, tracks demons, and identifies combat weaknesses. He wields a Nichirin Sword that turns jet-black upon first drawing, signifying rarity. His combat style merges Water Breathing techniques with Hinokami Kagura (Dance of the Fire God), an ancient Sun Breathing form passed down his family line.
During the Mugen Train mission, Tanjiro, accompanied by Nezuko, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Inosuke Hashibira, aids Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku in investigating disappearances. They confront Lower Rank One Enmu of the Twelve Kizuki, whose Blood Demon Art induces sleep and infiltrates dreams. Tanjiro initially experiences an idealized dream of his deceased family but, aided by Nezuko, recognizes the illusion. He awakens by committing suicide within the dream and severs Enmu's connection to the passengers. After Enmu fuses with the train, Tanjiro and Inosuke locate his neckbone within the locomotive. Tanjiro sustains a severe stomach wound from the train's conductor but stabilizes it via Total Concentration Breathing under Rengoku's guidance. He beheads Enmu using Hinokami Kagura, derailing the train.
Following Enmu's defeat, Upper Rank Three Akaza attacks. Tanjiro witnesses Rengoku's fatal battle against Akaza and hurls his sword at the fleeing demon, denouncing his cowardice. Rengoku succumbs to his injuries after entrusting Tanjiro with messages for his family and affirming Nezuko's place in the Corps.
Tanjiro exhibits profound kindness, empathy, and a strong sense of justice, often extending compassion even to remorseful demons. He is fiercely protective of Nezuko and his friends, displaying unwavering resolve to restore her humanity. His leadership and strategic thinking emerge during missions, like coordinating with Inosuke against Enmu. Trauma from his family's massacre fuels deep-seated rage against Muzan and irredeemable demons, though he maintains moral nuance in combat.
