Description
Maeda Keiji, adopted nephew of Maeda Toshiie and Matsu, maintains a perpetually happy-go-lucky demeanor. He revels in festivals and playful pranks, often targeting Toshiie himself. Despite these lighthearted interactions with his adoptive family, he conceals underlying resentment over their disapproval of his unrestrained lifestyle. He is constantly accompanied by a small monkey named Yumekichi. Keiji wields an oversized nodachi single-handedly with notable dexterity, employing a distinctive combat technique where he throws the sheath into the air and retrieves it mid-battle.

His history intertwines complexly with Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Hanbei Takenaka. Once close friends with Hideyoshi, their bond fractured due to Hideyoshi’s escalating thirst for power. This conflict resurfaces later, revealing Keiji’s jealousy toward Hanbei for replacing him as Hideyoshi’s confidant. Attempts to reconcile fail when Hideyoshi rejects him outright, leaving Keiji emotionally devastated yet ultimately accepting the estrangement.

Keiji’s personal journey shows significant evolution. Initially, he resists familial duties and flees the capital, comically evading Toshiie and Matsu’s attempts to return him. Over time, he transitions from carefree wanderer to a figure of responsibility. After Hideyoshi’s death, he aligns with the Uesugi army under Kenshin Uesugi, serving as a messenger and warrior. During this period, he develops an immediate infatuation with Magoichi Saika, devoting himself to protecting her despite her irritation. His path later branches: he may rejoin the Uesugi, return to the Maeda clan, or follow Magoichi with the Saika group.

By later events, Keiji assumes leadership of the Kaga Maeda clan, replacing Toshiie. While retaining his free-spirited nature, he grapples with the weight of leadership amid the era’s turbulence. He encounters Sakon Shima, recognizing parallels to his younger self, and mentors him toward meaningful service. A pivotal interaction occurs with Emperor Yoshiteru Ashikaga: after sharing mutual experiences of loss, their duel transitions into camaraderie, with Keiji pledging unwavering loyalty to his friends. This moment signifies his full acceptance of responsibility and emotional maturity.

In broader conflicts like the Sekigahara gathering depicted in "The Last Party," Keiji acts as a mediator. He interrupts clashes between rivals Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura, urging them to postpone their feud and unite against larger threats. He participates in the battle against the resurrected Oda Nobunaga, showcasing his combat skills alongside allies and reinforcing his theme of fostering unity amid chaos.

Keiji’s character draws inspiration from the historical figure Maeda Toshimasu, a celebrated kabukimono known for eccentricity and peerless strength. His legendary horse Matsukaze and reputation as a compassionate patron of the arts further inform his fictional portrayal.
