TV-Series
Description
Shinpachi Nagakura captains the Second Division of the Shinsengumi, a Bakumatsu-era warrior group. Hailing from Edo, he possesses a muscular frame standing 175 cm tall, with spiky brown hair, blue eyes, and practical attire featuring fingerless gloves, a headband, knee-high boots, and a necklace.
Nagakura presents an amiable, carefree demeanor, frequently bantering with comrades like Sanosuke Harada and Heisuke Toudou. He enjoys drinking, food, and female company, though distraction often makes him forget women's faces. Beneath this cheerfulness lies strong principles; he deeply values samurai ideals and harbors intense disdain for dishonesty or orders contradicting his beliefs. This commitment drives him to vocal opposition or decisive action, including severing ties with the Shinsengumi when their cause diverges from his convictions. His problem-solving is direct yet not reckless, prioritizing ally safety—even using himself as a human shield for subordinates.
Initially mistrustful of strangers, Nagakura advocates executing Chizuru Yukimura upon her discovery by the Shinsengumi. Learning her true gender provokes visible shock and flustered demands for "proof," declaring that "girls aren’t supposed to wear hakama." After her integration, he gradually accepts her presence, acknowledging the need for greater kindness. During the Ikedaya Inn incident, he protects Chizuru from an attacker, sustaining an injury. He downplays the wound initially but later permits her to bandage it, expressing gratitude and admitting his earlier mistrust was misplaced.
A pivotal change occurs when Nagakura is forcibly exposed to the Water of Life, transforming him into a Fury—a being with enhanced abilities vulnerable to corruption and bloodlust. This triggers profound guilt and depression; he isolates himself for weeks, pushes Chizuru away, and wallows in regret. Chizuru blames herself and strives to support him. His emotional turmoil dominates his personal storyline, creating distance. He eventually confesses feelings for Chizuru, a development occurring abruptly in later chapters.
Following the Shinsengumi's decline and relocation to Edo, Nagakura's disillusionment intensifies. He ultimately leaves the group entirely, forming the Seikeitai with Harada, prioritizing personal ideals over group loyalty.
In alternate settings like *Hakuouki SSL ~Sweet School Life~*, Nagakura appears as a vivacious, boisterous math and science teacher at Hakuou Academy, wearing a tracksuit—an Edo-era counterpart reinterpreted in a modern academic context.
