Description
Toshizo Hijikata commands as the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, a historical paramilitary force upholding order in Kyoto during the Bakumatsu era. Born to a farming family in Hino, he lost his parents early and was raised by siblings. His youth included peddling family-made medicine and cultivating a passion for swordsmanship, which drew him to the Shieikan dojo and the eventual co-founding of the Shinsengumi with Kondou Isami.

Dubbed the “Demon Vice-Commander” for mercilessly enforcing the group’s code, he wields discipline and loyalty as unyielding tools, exacting severe penalties for dissent. Yet beneath his fearsome exterior lies a guarded protectiveness, most evident in his dealings with Chizuru Yukimura, a girl seeking her father. Hijikata spares her upon learning of her ties to Koudou Yukimura, a doctor involved in crafting the Water of Life—an elixir that mutates humans into Rasetsu (Furies).

His strategic leadership proves pivotal during crises like the Ikedaya incident, where he directs the Shinsengumi to crush rebel plots, and in clashes against rivals such as the Chōshū and Satsuma clans. After Kondou’s injury, Hijikata shoulders full command, grappling with the physical and psychological toll of his own transformation into a Rasetsu—a desperate gambit to bolster his combat prowess. This metamorphosis fuels a visceral clash between duty and fading humanity, as he fights bloodlust to shield allies and Chizuru.

His rapport with Chizuru shifts from wary suspicion to tempered reliance. He defends her from threats like the demon Kazama Chikage, cautiously integrating her into Shinsengumi duties. Their bond strengthens through shared trials, though Hijikata habitually buries personal sentiments to safeguard the group’s cohesion. Spin-offs like *Hakuouki: SSL* transpose their dynamic into a modern school setting, casting him as a principled teacher and Chizuru as a student, their connection restrained by professionalism until her graduation.

Across adaptations—seasons, films, OVAs—he embodies steadfast loyalty to Kondou and the Shinsengumi’s cause, navigating betrayals, external onslaughts, and the ethical ambiguities of command. His final acts in the Boshin War cement his dedication to preserving the group’s legacy, even as its dissolution becomes inevitable amid Japan’s political upheaval.
