Description
Toshizo Hijikata, the Shinsengumi’s iron-willed vice-commander, enforces order with merciless precision during Japan’s turbulent Bakumatsu era, earning the moniker "Demon Vice-Commander." His unyielding discipline and tactical brilliance command both fear and loyalty from subordinates, yet beneath his steely exterior lies a guarded protectiveness toward Chizuru Yukimura, a girl he shelters after she encounters a Fury—a supernatural threat tied to his own cursed fate.

Once a wandering medicine peddler from a family of healers, Hijikata abandoned commerce to follow Isami Kondou, his lifelong friend and leader, shaping the Shinsengumi into a formidable force. Obsessed with securing the group’s legacy, he gambles his humanity by consuming the experimental "Water of Life," an elixir crafted by Chizuru’s father. The potion grants him Fury powers—superhuman strength laced with bloodlust and physical decay—forcing him to cling to reason through Chizuru’s steadfast support.

His strategic genius steers the Shinsengumi through pivotal clashes like the Ikedaya Incident and Kinmon Rebellion, reimagined in the series with heightened stakes. Antagonists like Chikage Kazama, a cunning demon lord, test his resolve, sparking battles where Hijikata sacrifices his fraying body to shield both comrades and Chizuru.

Initially detached, he gradually reveals vulnerability, relying on Chizuru to anchor him during Fury spirals. Their bond deepens through shared trials, his stoicism yielding to quiet trust. Later adaptations mirror his inner turmoil through visual shifts: Western military garb and cropped hair during the Aizu campaign signal his adaptation to a crumbling era.

Rooted in history, his swordsmanship, poetic sensibilities, and fanatical loyalty to the shogunate intertwine with fictionalized struggles against mortality and identity. Across all iterations, he remains a paradox—a warrior who wields cruelty as a tool for survival yet risks everything to honor his vows, embodying the Shinsengumi’s ideals to his last breath.
