TV-Series
Description
Komasan within the Shadowside continuity exists as a distinct entity from his original series counterpart, possessing a unique origin. Originating as Nobushige, a normal dog belonging to the Arihoshi family, he formed a profound bond with a small orange frog, considering it his brother. Both animals met a simultaneous tragic end when a stone komainu statue crushed them, an accident caused by a misfired spell from a young Mitsue Arihoshi during target practice. Nobushige reincarnated almost immediately into a Yo-kai, adopting the name Komasan to honor his frog brother, who initially did not become a Yo-kai and remained missing for a significant time.
In his everyday Lightside form, Komasan exhibits a more canine-like appearance than his original version. His pure white fur lacks the typical red swirls and blue stomach. He retains distinctive blue fiery eyebrows and sports additional flames near his front paws, with eyes perpetually closed, hovering slightly above the ground. Transitioning to his combat-ready Shadowside form drastically alters his appearance: fierce green eyes open, encircled by red rings, exposing sharp fangs. Red swirls cover his body, the flames intensify, and he develops a prominent fiery blue mane, wearing a red and yellow shimenawa rope adorned with two shide around his neck.
As a Yo-kai, Komasan possesses specific abilities. His pee has a purifying effect capable of dissolving barriers. In his Shadowside state, he demonstrates combat prowess, including summoning and dropping komainu statues onto enemies. He serves primarily as a guardian figure tied to the Arihoshi shrine lineage.
Komasan plays a significant role in major Shadowside conflicts. He is a major Yo-kai summoned by Natsume Amano using the Yo-kai Watch Arcane to battle the Oni King Rasen in *Yo-kai Watch Shadowside: The Return of the Oni King*, continuing as one of her trusted allies throughout the series. A pivotal character moment occurs in SS027 when Komasan detects a disturbance at Komajiro's grave. Investigating with Cole (disguised as Minamoto), footprints lead them to the frog, now reincarnated as the Yo-kai Komajiro. Their reunion prompts an investigation into their deaths. Confronting Mitsue Arihoshi reveals she accidentally caused the statue to fall. While Komajiro reacts with intense anger, Komasan shows milder irritation, ultimately reaching understanding after Mitsue confesses the hidden truth.
His relationship with Komajiro forms a foundational, deep brotherly bond rooted in their shared past life and death. His connection to the Arihoshi family, particularly apprentice shaman Akinori Arihoshi, remains significant due to his origins as their pet and shrine guardian. Komasan is also part of Summer's team when she becomes playable early in Chapter 2 of *Yo-kai Watch 4*.
