Originally the Arihoshi family shrine dog named Nobushige, Komasan shared a close bond with a small frog that often rode on his head. Both perished simultaneously when a stone komainu statue fell and crushed them, an incident triggered accidentally by young Mitsue Arihoshi practicing magic. Nobushige transformed into the Yo-kai Komasan upon death, while the frog's fate remained initially unknown.
In his everyday Lightside form, this Komasan appears more like a standard white dog, lacking the main series' red swirls and blue stomach markings. He retains blue fiery eyebrows and displays additional small flames near his front paws. His eyes stay perpetually closed, and he levitates slightly above the ground.
Shifting to his combat-oriented Shadowside form brings a markedly fiercer appearance: his eyes open, revealing green irises encircled by red rings, and he bares sharp fangs. Red swirls cover his body, his flames intensify and expand into a fiery blue mane, and he wears a ceremonial red-and-yellow shimenawa rope adorned with two shide paper streamers around his neck.
Within *Oni-ō no Fukkatsu*, Komasan is summoned by Natsume using the Yo-kai Watch Elder to combat the Oni King Rasen, continuing to assist her in subsequent Shadowside events. During episode SS027, observing damage to Komajiro’s grave led to an investigation that uncovered the truth of their deaths, confirming Mitsue’s accidental role. Komasan reacted with mild irritation, while Komajiro responded more aggressively, prompting a confrontation with Mitsue that concluded with her acknowledgment of the incident and explanation of the concealed truth.
This Shadowside iteration represents a distinct individual from the primary *Yo-kai Watch* timeline Komasan. His tribal affiliation is noted as Omamori within Shadowside-related media.
