TV Special
Description
Arsene Lupin III is the globally renowned master thief and the grandson of the fictional French gentleman thief Arsene Lupin. His ethnic origins are ambiguous and vary across different media, with older sources suggesting a mixed French-Japanese heritage while modern profiles list his birthplace and nationality as officially unknown. Trained in thievery from an early age, he reportedly learned to steal before he could write his own name, and he fully embraces his legacy as the third-generation thief, driven by a desire to complete heists that hold ancestral significance.

Lupin III possesses a fun-loving, mischievous, and charming demeanor, balancing this with exceptional intellect and adaptability. He finds greater thrill in the challenge of a heist than in possessing the treasure itself, often discarding stolen items or giving them away to those who value them more. While he operates under a flexible moral code and prioritizes his own self-interest, he generally avoids harming civilians and is known to act chivalrously, particularly toward women, and will oppose more violent criminals. His most significant vulnerability is his deep infatuation with Fujiko Mine, whose frequent betrayals repeatedly complicate his plans.

In the television special Dragon of Doom, Lupin III is motivated by a desire to reclaim his family's pride. He learns of a golden dragon statue located in the wreckage of the sunken RMS Titanic, a treasure that his grandfather, Arsene Lupin, had attempted to steal on the night the ship sank. A Hong Kong crime lord named Chin Chin Chu seeks to hire Lupin and his partners for the job, but Lupin refuses to collaborate and vows to retrieve the statue on his own. His actions in this story are a direct reflection of his pattern of pursuing heists tied to his personal and familial legacy.

Lupin's relationships are central to his adventures. Daisuke Jigen is his closest ally and partner, a pragmatic master marksman whose loyalty is one of the strongest bonds in Lupin's life. Goemon Ishikawa XIII is another ally, though his rigid honor code can put him at odds with the group's goals; in Dragon of Doom, Goemon actively opposes Lupin to protect his own family's honor regarding the same dragon statue. Fujiko Mine is a frequent accomplice and romantic interest who constantly switches between partner and rival, often betraying Lupin for personal gain, yet he repeatedly forgives her. Inspector Koichi Zenigata of Interpol is his persistent and respected pursuer, with Lupin viewing their rivalry as an engaging game and even showing him a degree of care.

In terms of development, Lupin remains largely a static character driven by his core traits, but Dragon of Doom highlights his loyalty and protective instincts. When the team is trapped in a room filled with a hate-inducing gas, causing Jigen to fight Goemon and Fujiko to attack him, Lupin resists the effects to protect his companions and ensure their survival. This underscores his commitment to his team despite their frequent betrayals and conflicts. His character also shows a pattern of refusing outside control, preferring to operate independently on his own terms.

Lupin III possesses a vast array of notable abilities. He is a master of disguise, capable of near-perfect impersonations after minimal observation. He demonstrates proficiency in multiple languages, academic fields, hand-to-hand combat, and vehicle operation. His manual dexterity allows for precise sleight-of-hand techniques, and he is an expert marksman, typically wielding a signature Walther P38 pistol. He also employs various gadgets, including grappling hooks, stun grenades, smoke bombs, and other inventive devices, though his sharp improvisational skills often prove to be his greatest asset.
