Description
Akubi is a genie who lives inside a magical bottle and is summoned whenever someone yawns, which also compels her to grant that person a wish. Her name comes from the Japanese word for yawn. She first appeared in the 1969 anime series Hakushon Daimaō, where she resides in the bottle with her father, the genie Hakushon Daimaō. In some later series, her stated age is 1010 years old. Akubi has a lively, mischievous personality and loves playing pranks, but she is fundamentally good-natured. She often twists the wording or meaning of wishes to create chaotic or humorous outcomes, which sets her apart from her father’s more bumbling efforts. She wields magic, frequently channeled through a tambourine, to grant wishes, transform objects, change her own appearance, and create unusual situations. Over time, her role has expanded from a secondary character to a protagonist in spin-off stories. She helps the shy girl Koron Nemuta gain confidence and assists a first-grader named Ruru-chan with school and romantic dilemmas. In a later sequel, she partners with Kantarō Yodayama, the grandson of her first human companion, and her journey focuses on preparing to become a genie queen. Akubi’s visual design has evolved: her original appearance features long red hair in a ponytail, a green vest, and red baggy pants, while a later redesign gives her long brown hair tied with a blue ribbon, a pink tube top, and a jeweled pink hat.
