Description
Elias Ainsworth is a humanoid entity of unknown origin, blending fae and human elements. His earliest memories consist solely of the color red and a belief he once consumed humans. He awoke in a forest with no past recollection or identity, wandering until collapsing in a snowstorm. Discovered by the mage Lindel, Elias was nursed back to health. Lindel's master, Rahab, bestowed the name Elias Ainsworth and urged Lindel to take him as an apprentice. This began centuries of nomadic life where Elias learned magic while tending reindeer. An attack by villagers, provoked by Elias's appearance, triggered his first documented transformation into a monstrous form, halted by Lindel. Eventually, Elias left Lindel and settled in Britain, undertaking tasks for the Church.

Physically, Elias typically manifests as a tall bipedal figure, significantly larger than an average human. His head is a wolf skull with goat horns, eye sockets glowing red, and his neck exposes dark purple skin. He wears a three-piece suit: a black robe embroidered with white thread, a black or blue vest, white undershirt, white gloves, and a blue stone bolo tie gifted by Rahab. Gold strings adorn his horns, connecting to a red cloth often pulled over his face outdoors. Elias can shapeshift into human forms or animals, though maintaining these requires conscious effort and fails during emotional distress. His true form is more bestial: taller and thinner with an additional ribcage, claws, a tail, black feathers, thorns, and tattered cloak-like appendages.

Elias purchased Chise Hatori, a Sleigh Beggy, at an auction to become his apprentice and eventual bride, driven by a desire to understand human emotions and prevent her early death. He transported her to his English home, introducing her to associates like the craft mage Angelica Varley. Accepting three Church assignments led to travels with Chise to locations such as Iceland and Ulthar. These missions involved encounters with dragons, blight purification, and confronting adversaries like Joseph. When Joseph harmed Chise, Elias transformed into his monstrous form intending to kill him – the first time Chise witnessed this aspect. The event left Elias unstable for days.

His personality combines politeness and kindness with profound reclusiveness stemming from an inability to relate to humans. Fascinated by emotions he cannot naturally experience, he studies and imitates human behavior, often adopting gentlemanly mannerisms, though he struggles with social nuances. He displays childlike tendencies, including throwing tantrums, and occasionally exhibits malice or manipulation, such as attempting to sacrifice Stella to transfer a dragon's curse from Chise, motivated by jealousy. He rarely interacts beyond a small circle including Chise, Lindel, Angelica, and the priest Simon. He detests children for perceiving his true nature. Despite emotional limitations, he forms a deep attachment to Chise; her absence evokes feelings of coldness and loneliness, leading him to destroy a message about the College and beg for her return. He acknowledges difficulties with empathy and requests Chise teach him human emotions, remaining protective and reacting with rage when her safety is threatened.

Key developments include experiencing loneliness while Chise traveled to craft her wand, his attempt to erase her memory of his near-cannibalistic impulse toward her (halting when she accepted the memory), and rejecting Titania's offers to reside in the fairy realm to save Chise. He later nearly accepted Titania's help to locate Chise after Joseph took her hostage—a consequence of his curse-transfer scheme—but ultimately refused, recognizing his flawed approach. Following Chise's rescue, they reconciled, exchanged rings in an informal wedding, and returned home. He subsequently became a professor at the College due to his magical expertise, though he struggled to maintain his glamour during classes.

Elias specializes in shadow magic and destructive spells, earning epithets like "Pilum Murialis" (Wall Spear) or "Thorn Mage." His abilities include teleportation, memory manipulation, hiding within shadows, and generating thorns. He can split into two beings: one half retains his consciousness in a dog-like form but with diminished powers and cognitive clarity, while reuniting restores full abilities. He also possesses significant physical strength, overpowering supernatural entities like Alcyone.
