Description
Ash Phoenix, originally named Ash Fenikkusu, serves as a central narrative figure. Initially introduced as the older brother in the mercenary duo Nameless Mercenaries, his origins lie as a war orphan raised at Lavender Home alongside younger brother Nichol and fellow orphan Narah Vaughn. Both brothers were later adopted by Neo-Britannian Empire high-ranking official Norland von Lunebelg. Norland exploited Ash's devotion to Nichol, forcing Ash into rigorous training under Christoph Scissorman to become a child soldier and assassin. His lethal skills earned him the title Knight of Thirteen, signified by a Roman numeral XIII shoulder tattoo.

A critical mission led to Nichol's death when Norland executed him for taking blame meant for Ash. Consumed by grief and rage, Ash attacked Norland but was subdued and imprisoned. During incarceration, Ash shared a cell block with Japanese political figure Jugo Sumeragi. Jugo's kindness and his ultimate sacrifice during an escape attempt deeply affected Ash. Before dying, Jugo entrusted Ash with a photograph of his daughter, Sakuya Sumeragi, extracting a vow to protect her. Ash escaped, but Jugo perished, deepening Ash's survivor's guilt.

After escaping, Ash encountered Sakuya on a battlefield. Before he could explain his promise, Sakuya—mistaking him for a threat—used her Geass power to compel absolute obedience. She implanted a command forcing him to perceive her as his most important person, psychologically replacing Nichol. This manipulation bound Ash to Sakuya, who operated under the male disguise "Rozé." Together, they formed the Nameless Mercenaries to oppose Neo-Britannia's occupation of Hokkaido.

Physically, Ash possesses a lean build, light brown hair partially dyed blue, and blue eyes. The blue streak originated as white, attributed to trauma from Nichol's death. He bears two prominent scars running down his chest and abdomen alongside his Knight of Thirteen tattoo.

In personality, Ash appears cold, efficient, and emotionally detached during combat, dispatching enemies with minimal dialogue. Outside battle, he exhibits compassion, notably towards stray animals, often caring for them with Sakuya. He displays shyness in social situations, such as flustering around Yoko Araki. Interactions with Sakuya's alter ego "Raspberry" reveal a more vulnerable, talkative side, including unguarded romantic attraction.

Ash's primary ability is exceptional prowess as a Knightmare Frame pilot. His combat style proves highly lethal and pragmatic, described as lacking honor by adversaries like Bismarck Waldstein. He single-handedly defeats multiple enemy units and overpowers elite Einberg knights, skills honed as Knight of Thirteen. His piloting enables operation of advanced frames like the Zi-Apollo, which combines with Sakuya's Zi-Artemis to form the Zi-Ortygia.

A turning point occurs when Christoph Scissorman's Anti-Geass device nullifies Sakuya's control. Ash relives the trauma of Nichol's death and learns of Sakuya's deception. Enraged, he confronts her and contemplates killing her but ultimately saves her from Christoph. He declares their partnership a temporary necessity, vowing to part ways permanently after defeating Norland. Despite this, their operational synergy remains intact during missions.

Ash's development culminates in the final battle against Norland. Initial defeat leaves him despondent until Sakuya inspires him to continue fighting. In a gesture of trust, Ash requests her to reapply the Geass, not for control, but to symbolize their shared resolve. They unite the Zi-Apollo and Zi-Artemis to assault Norland's fortress. During the clash, Ash deduces Norland's Foulbout knightmare will self-destruct. To protect Sakuya, he severs their units, using the Zi-Apollo to drag the Foulbout away. He sacrifices himself in the ensuing explosion, fulfilling his vow to Jugo while expressing regret only over never seeing Sakuya again.

His death leaves a legacy of liberation for Hokkaido, commemorated by a bronze statue of the Zi-Apollo. Sakuya later visits his grave at Lavender Home, reflecting their unresolved bond.
