Enji Todoroki, known professionally as the hero Endeavor, stands as a prominent figure in hero society. Witnessing his father's death during a rescue attempt in childhood ignited his drive to become a hero. He attended U.A. High School, adopting the name Endeavor to embody his relentless pursuit of strength. By age 20, he secured the No. 2 spot on Japan's Hero Billboard Chart. Yet, All Might's overwhelming power created an insurmountable gap, trapping Endeavor perpetually in second place and fueling a consuming obsession to surpass him by any means.
To overcome the overheating limitation of his Hellflame Quirk and engineer a successor capable of eclipsing All Might, Enji orchestrated a Quirk marriage with Rei Himura for her ice Quirk. Initial genuine affection, such as remembering Rei's favorite flower, faded as his ambitions consumed the marriage. Their first son, Toya, inherited an exceptionally powerful fire Quirk but lacked the necessary heat resistance, rendering him physically unfit for intense hero work. Subsequent children—Fuyumi (ice Quirk), Natsuo (ice Quirk), and Shoto (dual fire and ice Quirk)—were born in the quest for a "perfect" heir. Initially trained, Toya was sidelined due to health risks, while Fuyumi and Natsuo faced neglect as "failures." Shoto became the sole focus of brutal training starting at age five. This fractured the family, culminating in Rei's mental breakdown where she scalded Shoto's face, leading to her institutionalization. Desperate for validation, Toya seemingly perished in a wildfire after Enji failed to attend a training demonstration; Toya later reemerged as the villain Dabi.
Enji's personality was marked by intense pride, relentless ambition, and a volatile temper. He treated Shoto as a tool for his goals, forbidding contact with siblings and dismissing Rei's pleas. Publicly, his aggressive demeanor polarized opinion: some fans lauded his effectiveness, others condemned his harshness. His professional record, however, remained impeccable, boasting Japan's highest case resolution rate. He demonstrated exceptional combat intelligence, developing advanced techniques like Flashfire Fist variants (Jet Burn, Hell Spider) and Karmic Raze.
All Might's retirement following the Kamino Incident thrust Enji into the No. 1 Hero position by default, triggering a crisis of purpose. He sought All Might's counsel on becoming a Symbol of Peace. This prompted efforts at reconciliation: visiting Rei in psychiatric care, admitting his failures to Natsuo and Fuyumi, expressing a desire for his family's happiness without him, and purchasing them a separate home. During internships with Shoto, Izuku Midoriya, and Katsuki Bakugo, he trained them in aerial propulsion and revealed his dream of a family meal he would not attend.
The war against the Paranormal Liberation Front intensified his struggles. Toya's reappearance as Dabi publicly exposed Enji's past abuses. In battle, he lost his right arm to All For One and later suffered near-fatal burns confronting Dabi. This culminated in a physical and emotional breakdown where he admitted culpability for Toya's suffering, symbolically "killing" his younger self in a vision. Post-war, severe injuries including paralysis requiring a wheelchair and extensive facial scarring forced his retirement. Eight years later, he regained limited mobility using a cane but continued lifelong atonement efforts. He publicly accepted blame for the family's trauma in a press conference and supported them from afar.
In the film *World Heroes' Mission*, Enji participates in the global operation against Humarise, deploying alongside other heroes to disarm Trigger bombs.
Enji's Quirk, Hellflame, grants fire generation and manipulation, enabling flight through propulsion. His notable physical resilience allowed him to survive attacks from High-End Nomu and All For One. Post-injury, he created a fire-based prosthetic arm during combat. His legacy endures through Shoto, who later achieved the No. 2 Hero ranking.
