Description
Keiko Kuromura, the older sister of Shusaku Hojo, returns to the Hojo family home in Kure with her young daughter Harumi following her husband's death. Her status as a widow defines her experiences, especially the loss of custody over her son Hisao, whom her late husband's family claimed as their heir, denying her visitation rights. This separation breeds her initial resentment and critical demeanor.

She exhibits a cold and critical attitude towards her brother's wife, Suzu, frequently criticizing Suzu's clumsiness and absent-mindedness. This behavior stems partly from Keiko's own past as a fashionable "modern girl," contrasting with Suzu's traditional demeanor. Keiko's strained relationship with her in-laws further fuels her temperamental nature, causing her to take out frustrations on Suzu. Her grief over losing her husband and son manifests as outward hostility, particularly directed at Suzu.

A significant turning point occurs when her daughter Harumi dies during a bombing raid. Keiko blames Suzu, who was present and lost her right hand in the explosion. This tragedy deepens Keiko's grief, pushing her further into despair. Over time, however, she begins to process her losses and gradually softens towards Suzu. Her icy demeanor thaws as she recognizes Suzu's resilience and contributions to the family, moving beyond viewing her merely as household help to accepting her as a genuine family member.

Her character arc traces a journey from profound grief and bitterness toward gradual acceptance and reconciliation, shaped by the compounding tragedies of war and personal loss.
