Keiko Kuromura, the older sister of Shusaku Hojo, returns to the Hojo family home in Kure with her young daughter Harumi following her husband's death. Her status as a widow defines her experiences, especially the loss of custody over her son Hisao, whom her late husband's family claimed as their heir, denying her visitation rights. This separation breeds her initial resentment and critical demeanor.
