Hiroshi Nohara serves as the hardworking patriarch of the Nohara family, balancing his role as a low-level manager at Futaba Shoji with persistent overtime to manage a 32-year mortgage. A native of Omagari, Akita, he grew up with an older brother and later became uncle to a niece. At 29, he married Misae Koyama after their meeting in Kumamoto, and they now raise two children: the mischievous Shinnosuke and young Himawari. Though burdened by financial pressures, Hiroshi carves out time for family bonding, whether through leisure outings, shared jokes about attractive passersby with his son, or weekend social drinks with coworkers.
Misae oversees household finances with meticulous control, leaving Hiroshi to navigate familial tensions with humor and mediation. He often intercedes between Shinnosuke’s pranks and Misae’s discipline, deploying playful distractions or fictional analogies rather than strict reprimands. His notorious malodorous socks, a recurring gag, double as unconventional tools for rousing or mildly punishing the family.
When crises arise—such as a film-era trip to Hong Kong to rescue Shinnosuke—Hiroshi steps into action, underscoring his unwavering dedication to family unity. This commitment extends to routine cultural outings, vacations, and shared meals. A spin-off manga spotlights his midday rituals, detailing lunch preparations and office interactions, while a 2020 coffee commercial cemented his status as a culturally recognizable figure. Across adaptations, Hiroshi remains a blend of reliability and cheeky charm, anchored by his steadfast loyalty to those he loves.
