Description
Akaza is a major antagonist who holds the position of Upper Rank Three among the Twelve Kizuki, the elite demons serving under Muzan Kibutsuji. He has a muscular yet slim build, with skin so fair it appears a bright green-tinged white, patterned with thick blue lines resembling tattoos that trace from his forehead across his face and body. These markings are a demonic evolution of the criminal tattoos he bore as a human. He has short, bright pink hair and yellow eyes with pink eyelashes and blue sclera that look like cracked glass, with the kanji for Upper Rank and the character for Three etched into his irises. He typically wears a sleeveless dark purple-pink haori left open to expose his chest, baggy white pants rolled to just below the knee secured with a turquoise rope belt, and a chain of large round red pearls around each ankle, preferring to go barefoot.

Before becoming a demon, Akaza lived as a human named Hakuji in the slums of Edo. Born into extreme poverty, he resorted to pickpocketing and street fighting to afford medicine for his chronically ill father, earning criminal tattoos and the scorn of others. After his father committed suicide out of guilt, a devastated Hakuji was banished from Edo. He was later taken in by Keizo, the master of the Soryu dojo, who saw past his criminal record. Hakuji found peace and purpose training in martial arts and caring for Keizo’s sickly daughter, Koyuki, with whom he fell deeply in love. Keizo approved of their marriage, but this happiness was shattered when a rival dojo poisoned the well, killing both Keizo and Koyuki. Consumed by rage and grief, Hakuji massacred all sixty-seven members of the rival dojo with his bare hands. Muzan Kibutsuji found him at that moment, impressed by his strength, and transformed him into a demon, erasing his human memories and giving him the name Akaza.

As a demon, Akaza is stubborn, harsh, and bloodthirsty, driven by an obsessive desire to fight and defeat strong opponents. He holds a profound disdain for weakness, believing that the weak deserve to be eliminated. Despite this cruelty, he adheres to a unique code of honor: he refuses to harm or consume women under any circumstances, a lingering remnant of his human past for which Muzan has given him special permission. When he encounters a worthy opponent, he shows respect by remembering their name and admiring their prowess, often offering them the chance to become demons to pursue eternal strength. He views the relentless pursuit of power as the ultimate path to happiness and rejects humanity for its inherent frailty. His philosophy is a twisted echo of his buried human desire to protect his loved ones.

Akaza serves as a direct subordinate to Muzan, though he feels no personal emotion toward him, merely seeing him as a being who gives orders. He harbors strong hostile feelings toward his fellow Upper Ranks, viewing them as rivals. He is especially antagonistic toward Kokushibo, Upper Rank One, and deeply despises Doma, Upper Rank Two, not only because Doma surpassed him in rank but due to a profound ideological clash: Akaza loathes Doma’s soulless, sadistic cruelty, particularly his enjoyment in killing women, which violates Akaza’s core code.

Akaza’s abilities are centered on hand-to-hand combat, stemming from his mastery of martial arts. His Blood Demon Art, Destructive Death, allows him to channel shockwaves through his fists and legs in techniques such as Air Type, Disorder, Annihilation Type, Crown Splitter, and Explosive Flurry. His ultimate technique, Blue Chaotic Afterglow, unleashes an omnidirectional barrage of thin, sharp shockwaves. His most crucial ability is Compass Needle, a passive technique that deploys a snowflake-shaped compass beneath him, enabling him to sense an opponent’s Fighting Spirit, predict their attacks, and instinctively target their vital points. He also possesses immense physical strength, superhuman speed, and rapid regenerative abilities typical of Upper Rank demons.

Akaza plays a pivotal role in the series. During the Mugen Train Arc, he confronts and kills the Flame Hashira, Kyojuro Rengoku, an event that leaves a lasting impact on the protagonist Tanjiro Kamado. In the Swordsmith Village Arc, he appears briefly in a meeting of the Upper Ranks, where he displays open hostility toward Doma. His story culminates in the Infinity Castle Arc, where he battles Tanjiro and the Water Hashira, Giyu Tomioka. During the fight, Tanjiro’s unyielding spirit forces Akaza’s suppressed human memories to resurface, recalling his life as Hakuji, his love for Koyuki, and his promise to protect the weak. Overwhelmed by guilt and remorse for the atrocities he committed as a demon, Akaza rejects his demonic nature. After being beheaded by Tanjiro, he deliberately destroys his own core to stop his regeneration, committing suicide as an act of atonement. In his dying moments, he rejects Muzan’s control and apologizes to his father, master, and Koyuki, finally reuniting with them in the afterlife as his soul finds peace.
