Description
Toshizō Hijikata serves as Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, a special police force active in Kyoto during the Bakumatsu period. Born into a peasant family in the Tama region, he was orphaned young and raised by his elder brother. Despite his non-samurai origins, he pursued his aspiration to become a warrior, training at the Shieikan dojo. There, he forged a foundational lifelong bond with Kondō Isami, dedicating himself to elevating Kondō's status within the shogunate hierarchy.

Hijikata co-founded the Shinsengumi with Kondō, earning the moniker "Demon Vice-Commander" for his strict enforcement of the group's regulations. Though officially subordinate to Kondō, he managed most operational decisions and strategic planning, effectively acting as the organization's de facto leader. His leadership demanded high standards of discipline and loyalty from all members, irrespective of social background.

Early on, he encounters Chizuru Yukimura, a girl disguised as a boy searching for her father in Kyoto. Hijikata initially detains her as a witness to Shinsengumi activities but spares her upon learning her father is Kōdo Yukimura, a doctor linked to their investigations. He subsequently places her under his protection as a page, assuming responsibility for her welfare. Despite his stern exterior, he develops trust in her, frequently assigning her tasks critical to the Shinsengumi's operations.

As the Bakumatsu conflict escalates, Hijikata confronts mounting challenges, including Kondō's capture and execution by imperial forces. To compensate for the Shinsengumi's dwindling strength, he consumes Ochimizu, an experimental elixir transforming him into a Rasetsu. This grants enhanced combat abilities but induces bloodlust and physical deterioration. He struggles to conceal these effects while leading the Shinsengumi through losing battles, notably during their retreat to Edo and later Hakodate.

In the Boshin War's final stages, Hijikata commands the remaining Shinsengumi forces during the Battle of Hakodate. His Rasetsu transformation accelerates here. He confronts the demon Kazama Chikage, who acknowledges his resolve by bestowing the title "Hakuōki" upon him. Hijikata's story culminates in this battle, where he fights relentlessly until death, upholding his loyalty to Kondō's vision to the end.

His character arc remains defined by unwavering dedication to the Shinsengumi's ideals, tactical pragmatism, and a deeply internalized sense of responsibility. His relationships, particularly the brotherly dynamic with Kondō and his protective stance toward Chizuru, reveal layers of loyalty beneath his disciplined facade.
