Description
Toshizō Hijikata commands as Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, a special police force active in Kyoto during the Bakumatsu period. Born to a farming family in the Tama region, he first worked peddling his family's Ishida Powdered Medicine for injuries before dedicating himself to swordsmanship. Frequent job changes stemming from dissatisfaction led him to the Shieikan dojo and a meeting with Isami Kondō. Despite his peasant origins, Hijikata aspired to become a samurai, a goal nearly impossible under Japan's strict class system. He played a pivotal role in forming the Shinsengumi after the Rōshigumi split in 1863, remaining steadfastly loyal to Kondō.

Earning the epithet "Demon Vice-Commander" for his strict enforcement of the Shinsengumi's Kyokuchu Hatto code, Hijikata demanded unwavering discipline. The code forbade desertion, independent action, and unauthorized violence, violations often punished by seppuku or death. While making most operational decisions, he always deferred to Kondō's official authority. His primary ambition centered on elevating Kondō to the status of a respected general, reflecting deep loyalty and a willingness to shoulder harsh decisions to protect the group's honor. He treated all members as true warriors regardless of social background, holding them to exacting standards.

Hijikata first encounters Chizuru Yukimura during a patrol investigating escaped Rasetsu, superhuman beings created by the Ochimizu substance. Discovering her witnessing a violent incident, he takes her captive for questioning at Shinsengumi headquarters. Learning she is the daughter of Kōdō Yukimura—a doctor sought for his Ochimizu knowledge—Hijikata spares her life, arguing her gender and age make her unlikely a threat. He decides she will remain under their protection until her father is found. Later, after other captains insist he take responsibility for suggesting her retention, he assigns her as his page. He initially orders her to maintain a male disguise and restricts her movements within the compound.

Facing mounting Shinsengumi challenges, including political betrayals and battlefield losses, Hijikata assumes full command after Kondō is injured and Souji Okita falls ill, working relentlessly to sustain the group. His strain intensifies following his own transformation into a Rasetsu after consuming Ochimizu to fight the demon Kazama Chikage. This grants enhanced strength and healing but subjects him to bloodlust, sunlight weakness, and a reduced lifespan. He initially conceals his condition and resists assistance, but Chizuru's persistent support fosters gradual trust. Their relationship evolves into a canon romance; Hijikata displays protectiveness, shielding her from Kazama's attacks, and develops emotional reliance. In critical moments, he prioritizes her survival, ordering her to stay behind during dangerous campaigns, though she often disobeys out of loyalty.

After Kondō's capture and execution by imperial forces, Hijikata leads the diminished Shinsengumi north to Edo and later Ezo for a final stand. He struggles with the group's decline and his own Rasetsu mortality, confiding doubts to Chizuru while reaffirming his commitment to avoid dishonoring Kondō's legacy. In later seasons and films, his appearance changes: he cuts his long black hair and adopts Western-style clothing. During the Boshin War, he sustains severe injuries, including a gunshot wound, and succumbs in battle. His final moments vary across media; some depictions show him dying alongside Chizuru, others imply a solitary death.

Hijikata's personality blends stern authority with underlying compassion. He represses emotions to appear rational and aloof, particularly when making difficult choices like approving assassinations or enforcing desertion penalties. Yet he demonstrates loyalty beyond the group's interests, protecting Chizuru even when her demon heritage poses a threat. He respects women and values sincerity, evident in poetic pursuits like haiku. His interactions reveal dry humor, impatience with unnecessary apologies, and a brusque speaking style. Despite his "demon" reputation, close allies recognize his hidden kindness and self-sacrificing nature.
