Description
Motoko Kusanagi is the central figure in Ghost in the Shell: Arise, presented here as a full-body cyborg who has never possessed a purely organic physical body. Born under unusual circumstances after her mother died in an accident while still pregnant, Kusanagi was saved and raised within a fully prosthetic chassis. She served in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, earning the rank of Major, and later became a member of the elite covert Unit 501. In Arise, she is still a lieutenant at the beginning, gradually building the team that will become Public Security Section 9.
Her personality in this iteration is notably more prickly, no-nonsense, and guarded than in other versions, reflecting her ongoing struggle to assert autonomy over her own body—which has long been treated as property of the military. She is fiercely independent, highly intelligent, and possesses a sharp, sometimes abrasive demeanor. Despite this, Kusanagi also reveals moments of vulnerability and a softer side, particularly in her personal relationships.
Motoko's primary motivation in Arise is self-empowerment. She seeks to free herself from institutional control and to forge a unit that can operate according to her own terms and ethics. This drives her to decline an initial offer from Chief Daisuke Aramaki to join Section 9 and instead build her own private team, aiming to prove its worth in order to gain official recognition and operational freedom.
Her role in the story is that of a tactical commander and field operative, leading a hand-picked group of specialists including Batou, Togusa, Ishikawa, Saito, Pazu, and Borma. Together, they tackle complex cases involving political conspiracies, cyber-terrorism, and advanced technology. The narrative traces Kusanagi's transition from a lieutenant under Unit 501 to the Major who ultimately leads Section 9.
Key relationships include her complex, noncommittal dynamic with Chief Aramaki, who respects her abilities and seeks to recruit her while she maintains her distance. Her bond with Batou is one of mutual trust and battlefield camaraderie; despite his intimidating appearance, Batou is emotionally sensitive and freely speaks his mind, and he joins her unit without hesitation. A significant romantic relationship develops with Akira Hose, a prosthetic engineer, which reveals a gentle and trusting side of Kusanagi. However, this trust is ultimately violated when Akira is revealed to be involved in the central conspiracy, having tampered with her prosthetics, which deepens her guarded nature.
Her character development in Arise centers on her journey from a guarded and institutionalized operative to a more self-determined leader. She learns to open herself to others, only to face betrayal, and must reconcile her desire for connection with the necessity of maintaining control over her body and ghost. By the end, she emerges as a more resolved and capable commander, ready to lead her team on her own terms.
Kusanagi possesses exceptional combat skills honed through military service, making her proficient in firearms, hand-to-hand combat, and advanced acrobatics. Her full-body cyborg frame grants superhuman strength, speed, and coordination. She is also a wizard-class hacker, unofficially known as Fire Starter, capable of infiltrating and manipulating military-grade cyberbrains and networks. She can remotely control external humanoid drones and move her consciousness between hosts, as well as launch cyber-attacks that disable opponents or assume control of their bodies. Her tactical acumen in fourth-generation warfare and cyberbrain combative warfare is considered among the highest.
