Description
Susumu Kodai's journey began in tragedy when his parents perished during a Gamilas planet bomb attack on the Miura Peninsula. This loss, coupled with following his older brother Mamoru's path, drove him to enlist in the Earth Defense Force. Early in his career, consumed by blaming Captain Juzo Okita for Mamoru's death in battle, Kodai exhibited a hot-headed and impulsive nature. He served as the Yamato's tactical officer and battle chief, piloting a Cosmo Zero fighter and commanding the Black Tigers squadron.
The perilous voyage to Iscandar forged Kodai's maturity. As Okita's health deteriorated, Kodai rose from tactical officer to acting captain, ultimately achieving the full rank of captain by the events of *Space Battleship Yamato III*. His leadership steered the crew through critical missions, including clashes with the Comet Empire in *Yamato II* and the Black Nebula Empire in *Be Forever Yamato*, relinquishing command only twice during these conflicts.
In *Final Yamato* (2203), Kodai served as deputy captain under the revived Okita, who had been in cryogenic suspension. They confronted the Denguil Empire's plan to flood Earth using the water planet Aquarius. The climactic battle witnessed Okita's sacrifice to destroy Aquarius and save Earth. Following this mission, Kodai married his long-time crewmate Yuki Mori, cementing their relationship developed over previous voyages.
After *Final Yamato*, Kodai retired from military service, joining the merchant fleet. Prolonged absences during this period caused estrangement from Yuki. They had a daughter, Miyuki. Kodai was later recalled to command a rebuilt Yamato in *Resurrection* after Yuki's ship vanished, reaffirming his deep connection to the vessel's legacy.
Kodai's character arc consistently traced his evolution from vengeance-fueled impulsiveness to disciplined leadership, shaped by profound loss, Okita's mentorship, and his bond with Yuki. His actions across all missions underscored themes of duty and sacrifice, culminating in his final canonical command during *Resurrection*.
