Description
Born on July 7, 2178, in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, Susumu Kodai endured the Garmillas planet bomb attack of 2193 that killed his parents and extended family, leaving only him and his older brother Mamoru alive. This event transformed his pacifist nature into a vengeful, hot-blooded demeanor. He preserved his father’s harmonica as a keepsake and later inherited Mamoru’s pistol after his brother’s apparent battlefield death.

Kodai pursued Mamoru’s path into the Space Officer Training Academy, studying under Headmaster Ryu Hijikata and instructor Isami Enomoto alongside classmates Daisuke Shima and Hajime Hirata. Graduating, he joined the 7th Air Wing Space Tactical Division. His participation in Operation M on Mars during December 2198—retrieving the wave-motion core from the fallen emissary Sasha Iscandar—earned him promotion to Lieutenant and appointment as Tactical Officer aboard the Yamato in 2199, a role originally meant for Mamoru.

During the voyage to Iscandar, Kodai’s initial clashes with Captain Juzo Okita over his brother’s fate gave way to maturity forged through combat and command. He pioneered anti-submarine tactics and authorized the first firing of the Wave-Motion Gun while developing a romance with operations officer Yuki Mori. As Okita’s health failed, Kodai assumed acting captaincy and discovered Mamoru alive on Iscandar, reshaping his worldview from vengeance to peace.

By 2201, Kodai captained an escort destroyer and became engaged to Yuki Mori. When Earth dismissed a distress signal from Telezart, he protested and led a mutiny to commandeer the Yamato, pursuing the signal’s origin. Confronting the White Comet Empire (Gatlantis), he allied with former adversary Dessler of Garmillas. In the final battle against Emperor Zwordar, he piloted the Yamato on a suicide run against the enemy flagship while cradling Yuki’s lifeless body, though both survived.

Kodai later commanded the 65th Escort Squadron until 2205, dismissed for disobeying Earth’s policies during the "Iscandar Incident." By 2207, he inspected the Saturn Restoration Project aboard the Ginga. After Dezarium invaded Earth, he reunited with Yuki but failed to protect her during Operation DAD, resulting in her capture. Admiral Yamanami relieved him of command for emotional instability. Further tragedies followed: the abduction of his niece Sasha (Starsha’s daughter) and Yuki’s memory loss. These losses drove him to Yamato’s air corps, seeking redemption in frontline combat while clinging to hope for reconciliation.
