Following his retirement from military service after *Final Yamato*, Susumu Kodai joined the merchant fleet. His prolonged absences from Earth led to estrangement from his family. During this period, he and Yuki Mori had a daughter, Miyuki Kodai. Years later, after Mori's spacecraft disappeared on a mission, Shiro Sanada recalled Kodai to service. Kodai assumed command of the newly rebuilt *Yamato* to lead a rescue operation for Mori and investigate a spatial anomaly threatening Earth, stepping back into a leadership role despite his time away from active duty.
