Katsuhito Masaki, originally Prince Yosho of Jurai, is a central figure in the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki continuity. As the First Prince, son of Emperor Azusa and his Earthling wife Funaho, he faced political challenges from birth and became fiercely protective of his mother. At age eight, he bonded with the first-generation Royal Tree, naming it Funaho to bolster her standing, gaining extended longevity and significant power, positioning him as a throne contender. At the Galaxy Academy, Yosho met Airi from Airai. Their relationship produced a daughter, Minaho Masaki, but was strained by societal tensions as Airi's people despised Jurai. Simultaneously, Yosho developed feelings for Misaki, his father's second wife, though this remained unresolved. Later, an arranged marriage to his half-sister Ayeka prompted his departure. Using a battle with the space pirate Ryoko as cover, he lured her to Earth. He subdued Ryoko, sealing her in a cave near the Masaki Shrine with the Tenchi-ken sword. His departure stemmed primarily from love for Airi and the impossibility of rejecting the marriage without causing a succession crisis. On Earth, Yosho assumed the identity of Katsuhito Masaki, becoming the shrine's Shinto priest to maintain secrecy. He married Kasumi, a relative of his mother, and they had at least three children, including Nobuyuki and Kiriko. After Kasumi's death at age 138—she declined further life extension—Katsuhito entered a common-law marriage with Airi, fathering another daughter, Kiyone Masaki. Nobuyuki and Kiyone later had two children: Tennyo and Tenchi Masaki. To conceal his slow aging, Katsuhito projected an illusion of advanced age, a practice adopted by Nobuyuki and Tennyo. Katsuhito secretly maintained contact with Jurai through Seto Kamiki Jurai, the "Devil Princess." She facilitated offworld education for Kiriko and Tennyo via the Galaxy Academy. He trained Tenchi in Jurai swordsmanship and Shinto rituals, anticipating Ayeka's arrival. Orchestrating events, he ensured Tenchi released Ryoko, intending for Tenchi to replace him as Jurai's heir. This included embedding Ryoko's three power-source gems into the Tenchi-ken's pommel, which sustained the Royal Tree Funaho for over 700 years and preserved his youth. Within the OVA narrative, Katsuhito acts as a strategic manipulator, leveraging his knowledge of Jurai politics and family dynamics. He ensures Tenchi's latent abilities, like creating Light Hawk Wings, are honed for battles such as the confrontation with Kagato. His own power includes generating shields through Funaho, though he cannot produce true Light Hawk Wings independently. Regarding the 2016 OVA focusing on Nobuyuki's marriage, Katsuhito's established role as a background orchestrator and family patriarch suggests continuity. In spin-offs like the novel-based *Tenchi Muyo! Daughter of Darkness*, Katsuhito's past is briefly explored through an antagonist, Yuzuha, holding a grudge against him for an incident on Jurai. Other adaptations, such as Hitoshi Okuda's manga and *Ai Tenchi Muyo!*, omit or minimize his presence.
