Description
Katsuhito Masaki, the grandfather of the protagonist Tenchi Masaki, is a character whose seemingly simple role as a Shinto shrine priest conceals a profoundly complex history and strategic mind. Across the various Tenchi Muyo! continuities, his identity shifts, but he is most famously depicted as the original Prince Yosho of the planet Jurai. In the primary OVA continuity, he is the first son of Emperor Azusa and his Earth-born wife Funaho, making him the First Crown Prince of the Jurai Empire. Born into a political landscape that did not universally accept his mixed heritage, he became fiercely protective of his mother from a young age. At only eight years old, he bonded with a first-generation Royal Tree, which he named Funaho in her honor. This bond granted him extended longevity and significant power, positioning him as a major contender for the throne.
While attending the Galaxy Academy, Yosho fell in love with Airi, a woman from the planet Airai, whose people deeply despised the Juraian royal family. Their relationship produced a daughter, Minaho, but was fraught with difficulty. Simultaneously, he was arranged to marry his half-sister, Ayeka. To avoid this politically sensitive marriage without causing a devastating succession crisis, and driven by his love for Airi, he seized an opportunity when the space pirate Ryoko attacked Jurai. Using the battle as a cover, he lured Ryoko to Earth, subdued her, sealed her within a cave on the grounds of what would become the Masaki Shrine, and anchored her power source—three powerful gems—to the pommel of his sword, the Tenchi-ken.
On Earth, Yosho fully abandoned his former life, taking on the name Katsuhito Masaki and becoming the shrine's Shinto priest to maintain his secrecy. He married Kasumi, a relative of his mother, and had several children, including Tenchi's father, Nobuyuki. After Kasumi's death, he entered a common-law marriage with his former love Airi, fathering another daughter, Kiyone, who would become Tenchi's mother. To conceal his incredibly slow aging—a result of being sustained for over 700 years by Ryoko's gems channeling power into his Royal Tree, Funaho—Katsuhito projected an illusion of advanced age, appearing as a frail, grey-haired old man while retaining his youthful vigor beneath the surface. This illusion allows him to live among his descendants without arousing suspicion.
Katsuhito's personality is a careful balance of a wise, gentle grandfather and a cunning, long-term strategist. He is patient and observant, having waited centuries for his plans to come to fruition. He is deeply dedicated to his family's well-being, but his methods are often indirect and manipulative. He secretly maintained contact with the formidable political operator Seto Kamiki Jurai, using her influence to provide opportunities for his descendants, such as sending his granddaughter Tennyo to the Galaxy Academy. He also trained Tenchi in both Shinto rituals and a style of swordsmanship that is, unbeknownst to the boy, the royal art of Jurai. His primary motivation is not to reclaim his own throne but to orchestrate events so that his grandson, Tenchi, can take his place as the rightful heir to Jurai. He anticipated Ayeka's eventual arrival on Earth and deliberately arranged for Tenchi to discover and release Ryoko from her seal, fully intending for this event to set Tenchi on the path that would lead him into space and into his destiny as the wielder of the Light Hawk Wings.
His key relationships are therefore all part of a grand design. With Tenchi, he is both a loving grandfather and a master manipulator, ensuring the boy has the skills and the catalyst needed to surpass him. With Ryoko, he is the jailer who trapped her for seven centuries and a key piece of the puzzle that would later bring her into his grandson's life. His relationship with the Royal Tree Funaho is his lifeline, providing him with power and longevity. In battle, his abilities are substantial, though not on the scale of his grandson's full power. As a master swordsman, he is a peerless fighter, and his connection to Funaho allows him to generate powerful defensive shields. However, series creator Masaki Kajishima clarified that these shields are not true Light Hawk Wings, which he cannot generate independently.
Outside the main OVA continuity, Katsuhito's character varies significantly. In the Tenchi Universe timeline, he is still the legendary prince Yosho and a great swordsman, but he is truly as old as he appears and has a different family history. In the Tenchi in Tokyo continuity, he has no connection to Jurai at all; he is simply the wise guardian of the Masaki Shrine and a protector of Earth. Despite these variations, the core archetype of a wise, elderly mentor who is far more than he seems remains consistent across his appearances.
