Description
Haida, an anthropomorphic spotted hyena, works in the accounting department of Carrier Man Trading Co., Ltd. alongside colleagues Retsuko and Fenneko. His grayish-brown fur, dark gray muzzle dotted with faint spots, hazel eyes, and distinctive underbite define his appearance. Professionally, he dons a white dress shirt, red tie, and black dress pants, swapping them for casual attire like a red-and-black striped shirt, leather jacket, jeans, and boots outside office hours.

Six months into their employment, Haida develops a lasting romantic interest in Retsuko after observing her discreetly refill her water bottle. Over five years, his timid, neurotic disposition—shaped by low self-esteem and passive tendencies stemming from his father’s domineering influence—repeatedly thwarts his attempts to confess. Despite Retsuko’s relationships with Resasuke and Tadano, Haida remains steadfastly loyal, balancing occasional jealousy with a commitment to her well-being.

Season 3 sees him torn between Retsuko and Inui, a musically inclined coworker. After rescuing Retsuko from a stalker, he reaffirms his devotion, though their bond stays platonic. Promoted to accounting director in Season 4, Haida is pressured into financial fraud by his superior, Himuro. Retsuko’s intervention leads him to resign and confront his moral compromises, catalyzing significant personal growth.

Post-resignation in Season 5, Haida faces unemployment, eviction from his family’s apartment, and a spiral into compulsive gaming while sheltering in an internet café. Reluctant to seek aid, he strains his relationship with Retsuko until she invites him to live with her. Tensions with his conservative politician father escalate when Haida defies family expectations to support Retsuko’s political campaign, solidifying his shift from passivity to purposeful action.

His friendships with Fenneko—who offers blunt yet caring guidance on his unrequited feelings—and Anai, initially a workplace rival who later expresses concern during his homelessness, add layers to his narrative. Haida’s passion for punk rock and bass guitar intermittently surfaces, contrasting his corporate routine.

The series concludes with Haida marrying Retsuko, embodying his evolution into a reliable partner. His trajectory underscores themes of self-acceptance, resilience against familial and societal constraints, and the transformative power of mutual support in relationships.
