Description
Leonhart Saijō, known as Leo, attends First High School as a second-year Course 2 student. He displays Germanic features: chestnut hair, green eyes, and an athletic, increasingly muscular build. His father is half-Japanese and his mother quarter-Japanese. Leo is the third-generation inheritor of the "First Type-Burg Folge" genetic modifications from his grandfather, Georg Ostburg, a rare first-generation survivor. This grants him augmented physical abilities and inhuman endurance, proven when surviving a motorcycle crash to save a child and during combat against paranormal threats. He harbors a deep fear of mental deterioration and early death, common among early test subjects, leading him to adopt his grandfather's habit of night roaming as a countermeasure.
His family, based in Sōka, Saitama Prefecture, manages welfare-rehab facilities, vigilante groups, and employment services. Historically a yakuza organization, the family discontinued this activity as a condition for Georg's marriage into the Saijō family. Raised primarily by Georg, Leo developed a strong attachment to him and used his grandfather's old-generation gauntlet CAD throughout his first year at First High.
Leo possesses an easy-going, courageous, and hot-blooded personality, though occasionally clueless. His frank nature frequently sparks heated arguments with Chiba Erika, though they also collaborate on training. He is easily persuaded and motivated to assist others, reflecting his loyalty. Despite his underlying fears, he maintains a bright disposition and highly values trust in relationships.
His magical specialization is Fortifying Magic, a branch of Convergence Magic that stabilizes molecular coordinates within a narrow area. This allows him to harden objects like CADs or clothing into armor. Key techniques include:
- **Panzer**: Prevents breakage by fixing coordinates against impact.
- **Halt**: Immobilizes objects by anchoring them to a point.
- **Schild**: Turns a CAD into a reinforced shield.
- **Streitkolben**: Encases limbs in psion-based armor for attacks.
- **Siegfried**: His trump card, hardening his body to nullify external forces, consuming immense energy and causing extreme hunger and potential clothing damage.
He also mastered **Badariforging**, a medical magic developed by Tatsuya Shiba to repair cellular damage, which Leo later taught to junior students. During high school, he trained with Erika to wield **Usuba Kagerō**, creating an ultrathin armor-slicing blade, though legal restrictions later forced its discontinuation.
Leo's relationships are central. He was the first to befriend Tatsuya Shiba, respecting his engineering skills and trusting him deeply despite occasional wariness of his capabilities. This loyalty persists after learning of Tatsuya's military ties and Yotsuba lineage, as Leo prioritizes their friendship. His bond with Erika evolves from frequent quarrels into a master-student dynamic, particularly when she trains him in Chiba family techniques. Their rapport fuels peer speculation about romance, which both deny.
Across various arcs, Leo's role expands. During the 2095 Nine Schools Competition, he tested Tatsuya's prototype Weaponized Integrated CAD, the "Mini-Communicator," later joining the Monolith Code team as a defender. In January 2096, he fought paranormal parasites using Siegfried and upgraded knuckle duster CADs gifted by Rosen Magicraft. That spring, during the Bonin Islands vacation depicted in the 2017 film, he confronted USNA magicians from STARS during a mission to rescue genetically modified subjects.
Post-graduation, Leo attends Katsuwa Rescue University to train for disaster response. He returns to First High as a trainer, instructing the Martial Magic Arts Club in techniques like Badariforging during their 2099 summer camp. His commitment to rescue work aligns with his physical gifts and desire to protect others.
