OVA
Description
Moutoku Sousou is the head of Kyosho Academy, the school representing the Wei faction in the ongoing turf war among Kanto region schools. He is a third-year student classified as a B-rank fighter. He is the modern inheritor of the spirit of the historical warlord Cao Cao, and like many fighters in this world, he carries a dragon—a powerful inner force that can grant immense strength but also poses a risk of possession. Sousou has short brown hair and yellow eyes. His early life was marked by hardship; as a child he was often bullied, and it was his classmate and future close ally Chuukou Kyocho who first stood up for him at the dojo they both attended. That event forged a deep bond of loyalty between them.
Sousou’s personality is eccentric and somewhat detached. For much of the early story he shows little interest in the school politics or battles raging around him, preferring to sleep through conflicts while his subordinates handle affairs. He is not driven by a desire for territory or artifacts such as the Gyokuji or the Hyakuhekitou; instead, he is more invested in controlling and observing powerful fighters. He often teases Kaku for wearing glasses, telling her she looks cuter without them, and he values his friendships deeply, especially with Genjou Kakouton and Houkou Kakuka. When those close to him are threatened, he becomes fiercely protective.
Sousou’s central struggle is with the dragon that dwells within him. Before his dragon awakened, he was calm and relatively easygoing. Once the dragon’s power stirred, however, he became violent, bloodthirsty, and power-mad, as the dragon’s influence nearly consumed his mind. This transformation made him unpredictable and dangerous, even to his allies. In one instance, he nearly killed his best friend Kakouton while in a dragon-induced rage, after which he had to be chained to a wall and watched over to prevent further harm. Later, with the help of those who cared for him, particularly Chuukou Kyocho, he learned to control the dragon’s power and regained his composure. This internal battle defines much of his character development.
In the story of the OVA Shūgaku Tōshi Keppu-roku, Sousou appears as a supporting character. His school, Kyosho, is one of the three major powers participating in the “shūgaku” journey to Kyoto, where fighters seek to replenish the spiritual energy of their magatama by collecting sword tsuba from local warriors who inherited the spirits of Japanese warlords. Sousou’s role is that of a formidable rival leader, but he is not the primary antagonist; his presence adds tension to the encounters between the schools.
Key relationships include his bond with Genjou Kakouton, a loyal friend and fighter who often acts as his right hand, and with Houkou Kakuka, who holds deep romantic feelings for him and is devastated when she believes he has died. After the Battle of Red Cliffs, in which Sousou was presumed killed, he later reappears alive during the events of Great Guardians, surprising Kakuka and bringing her to tears. This reunion suggests that he does treasure her, despite his often aloof demeanor.
Sousou’s notable abilities stem from his dragon, which grants him immense physical power. He is considered one of the strongest fighters in the series, capable of matching and overwhelming other high-level toushi. In his awakened form, he can unleash devastating attacks that blow opponents away with sheer force. He also experiences strange recurring dreams of an old man with writing on his forehead who asks Sousou to avenge him—a reflection of the lingering influence of his historical counterpart’s unfinished business.
Overall, Moutoku Sousou is a troubled yet powerful leader whose journey is defined by his struggle to master his own inner darkness, his loyalty to his close companions, and his evolving role in the larger conflict between the schools.
