Description
Mari Ohara is one of the nine main characters in Love Live! Sunshine!! and a third-year student at Uranohoshi Girls' High School. She is of mixed heritage, with an Italian-American father who manages a hotel chain and a Japanese mother, and she lives in a suite at the family's hotel on Awashima Island. Mari also serves as the school's chairwoman after her family makes a substantial donation to keep the school running. Her image color is purple, and she is a member of the sub-unit Guilty Kiss within the group Aqours.
Mari has a bright, eccentric, and mischievous personality, often making jokes and preferring to act independently. She frequently inserts English words into her speech, reflecting her bilingual upbringing, though her accent and use of English diminish when she becomes sad or serious. Her catchphrase is "Shiny!" and she often says "You only live once!" to encourage others. Despite her confident and fearless demeanor, Mari initially does not feel suited to becoming a school idol, as she views the style as too traditional for her tastes and background. Her favorite music genre is industrial metal, setting her apart from many of her peers.
Two years before the main story, Mari, along with her childhood friends Kanan Matsuura and Dia Kurosawa, formed a school idol group during their first year. However, Mari suffered an injury before a key performance, leading Kanan to deliberately stop the performance to prevent further harm, causing a rift between them. The group disbanded, and Mari left to study abroad. She returns in the third year, re-enrolling at Uranohoshi after learning of the new Aqours formation and the school's merger crisis. Initially testing the new group by setting a challenge for them to fill the gymnasium for a live performance, she later reconciles with Kanan and joins Aqours as the seventh member.
Mari's motivations are driven by a desire to inspire and support her friends, as well as to pursue her own dream of being part of a successful school idol group. She gradually grows more self-assured and takes on greater responsibilities, including composing music for Aqours. Her leadership and creativity help solidify the group's bond during competitions. Key relationships include her deep, sometimes strained friendship with Kanan and Dia, her close camaraderie with group leader Chika Takami and fellow member Riko Sakurauchi, and her role as a catalyst for change within the group.
Mari possesses notable physical flexibility and singing talent, which allow her to perform complex dance moves and contribute to Aqours' musical compositions. She also displays a talent for composing, writing many of the group's songs. Throughout the series, she undergoes significant development, moving from a hesitant and emotionally guarded individual to a confident and open idol who embraces her identity and the bonds she has formed with her friends.
