TV-Series
Description
Nagisa Misumi is the energetic and athletic protagonist of the Pretty Cure franchise, introduced in the original Futari wa Pretty Cure series and continuing as a main character in its sequel, Pretty Cure Max Heart. She is a student at Verone Academy, where she is the ace of the girls' lacrosse team despite being only in her early teens. Her birthday is October 10. She lives with her parents, Rie and Takashi Misumi, and her younger brother, Ryouta Misumi, in an apartment.
Nagisa is a fair-skinned girl with short, shoulder-length orange or light brown hair and brown eyes. She typically wears her school uniform, which consists of a red-orange blazer, a white shirt, a blue striped bow, and a teal plaid skirt. Her casual attire includes a black-and-white raglan shirt under a pink jacket, a red miniskirt, and pink socks with sneakers. When transformed into Cure Black, her hair becomes slightly longer with her bangs swept to one side, and she wears a black and pink costume with a cropped top, white ruffles, a large bow at the chest, fingerless gauntlets with pink heart accents, a short black skirt revealing black compression shorts, a pink heart-shaped belt buckle, and dark red shoes with black leg warmers. In Max Heart, her outfit was modified to cover her midriff, and the design gained additional ruffles and gold accents.
Nagisa is outgoing, cheerful, and highly energetic, with a strong sense of justice and a reckless streak. She is passionate about sports, especially lacrosse, and excels in physical activities but struggles academically and dislikes studying. She has a large appetite, particularly for chocolate and foods with the word "yaki" in them. Despite her tomboyish exterior and being admired by many girls at her school, she is actually quite girly at heart: she dreams of romantic love, has a large collection of stuffed animals, enjoys shopping (often spending all her money), and tries to play up her femininity. She is sensitive and cares deeply for others but often tries to hide her vulnerable feelings. Her typical catchphrase is "Unbelievable!" when upset, and she often says "Lucky!" when things go well.
Her motivation to fight as Cure Black stems from a strong desire to protect others and uphold justice. She takes her role as a Pretty Cure seriously, though she initially struggled with the responsibility and the conflict with her personal life. Over the course of Futari wa Precure and Max Heart, she grows more confident in her abilities and more willing to accept her duty.
Nagisa's primary role in the story is to serve as one of the two main heroines alongside her partner Honoka Yukishiro. Together, they form the original Pretty Cure duo. Hikari Kujou, who transforms into Shiny Luminous, later joins them in Max Heart as a close ally. Nagisa's bond with Honoka is central to the narrative: they initially did not get along, but through their shared battles and daily life, they develop a deep, inseparable friendship. Nagisa also forms a close bond with her fairy partner Mepple, who lives inside her Card Commune. Although Mepple is often a mischievous and annoying presence, she genuinely cares for him and protects him fiercely. Her relationship with her younger brother Ryouta is characterized by frequent bickering, but she is protective of him. She has a crush on an older student named Shougo Fujimura, which gradually fades as she grows closer to Honoka.
As Cure Black, Nagisa gains superhuman strength, speed, and agility. She is the more physically powerful of the two Cures and often leads the offensive combat. She can jump several times her own height and deliver powerful strikes. To transform, she swipes the Queen card across Mepple in his Card Commune form, triggering a Dual Aurora Wave. Her main attacks require teamwork with Cure White; by holding hands, they can perform techniques such as Marble Screw, which unleashes a spiral of lightning and energy, and Rainbow Therapy, a healing and purification move. Their combined abilities are essential to defeating the villains, and they are vulnerable when separated, as they cannot use their special techniques without holding hands. In Max Heart, Nagisa's transformation and combat abilities are enhanced, and she gains upgraded forms such as the golden-suited Diamond Line in the first Max Heart film and the more powerful Super Cure Black in the second film.
Throughout the series, Nagisa matures from a somewhat impulsive and distracted teenager into a more reliable and selfless hero. She learns to balance her ordinary life with her extraordinary duties, deepens her friendship with Honoka, and comes to understand the full meaning of protecting what she loves.
