Description
Kazuki Makabe, originating from Tatsumiyajima Island, initially lived unaware of global Festum invasions until attacks forced his deployment as a Fafner pilot. A childhood Festum-related incident, where he accidentally injured Soushi Minashiro's eye, burdened him with lasting guilt and strained their friendship for years. Genetically engineered for piloting, he possesses exceptional physical abilities: superior athleticism, endurance, and unmatched combat skills among his peers.
First recruited to pilot Mark Elf during Tatsumiya's initial Festum attack, he later transitioned to the Salvator-model Mark Sein after capture by the Neo UN. This unit amplified his capabilities but accelerated assimilation, a process causing his body to gradually transform into crystal, resulting in near-blindness. His role evolved across conflicts: in *Heaven and Earth*, he battled advanced Festum threats while clinging to hope for Soushi's return. By *Exodus*, he accepted a blessing from the island's Mir, halting assimilation but reducing his lifespan to three years. This choice transitioned him beyond humanity, sacrificing senses like taste and smell.
Key relationship arcs define his journey. His bond with Soushi shifted from estrangement to profound interdependence; Soushi's kidnapping triggered desperate rescue attempts, and subsequent disappearances deepened Kazuki's resolve to wait indefinitely for reunions. Interactions with Maya Toomi offered stability, though romantic connections remained unexplored despite affections from others like Shōko Hazama and Canon Memphis. His culinary skills, developed while living with his father Fumihiko, featured prominently during quieter periods, such as his work at the Rakuen café in *Exodus*.
In *The Beyond*, Kazuki piloted upgraded units: first Mark Zwei Kai "Grimreaper" during the failed Fifth Operation Azure, where he disappeared mid-battle, and later Mark Zehn Kai "Achilles" to rescue Soushi from a Festum-created simulated Tatsumiyajima. His assimilation abilities expanded to include erasing Festum entities, exemplified when he returned Floro to "nothingness"—an act fueling Soushi's hatred. After transforming Mark Zehn Kai into the Salvator-model Mark Alles during Wadatsumijima's defense, he achieved stability without further physical degradation. Post-conflict, he departed the island with Kōyō Kasugai to travel the world.
His character development spanned isolation to acceptance. Early struggles involved self-blame for losses like Shōko's death and Soushi's disappearances, leading to death-seeking behavior. By *Exodus*, he embraced his altered existence, prioritizing survival to protect others. His demeanor evolved from Stepford Smiler to someone openly teasing friends, though lingering melancholy surfaced when confronting Soushi's unresolved resentment in *The Beyond*.
