Description
Born in 2131 on Tatsumiyajima Island, Kazuki Makabe belonged to a generation genetically engineered to pilot Fafner units against the Festum alien threat. Raised solely by his father, Fumihiko Makabe, after his mother Akane fell to Festum assimilation during his childhood, Kazuki exhibited exceptional physical abilities from a young age. He surpassed all peers and adults in endurance, speed, and combat skill, easily defeating martial artists like Sakura Kaname. This athletic prowess made him the island's prime Fafner pilot candidate when Festum breached Tatsumiyajima's defenses in 2146.
A childhood accident defined Kazuki's protective nature: while shielding Soushi Minashiro from Festum assimilation using a damaged radio, he accidentally injured Soushi's eye. The resulting guilt created a lasting estrangement between them for nearly five years. During the Festum attack, Kazuki reluctantly piloted the Fafner Mark Elf under Soushi's tactical guidance, forging their essential combat partnership. After fellow pilot Shōko Hazama sacrificed herself, Kazuki questioned his role and briefly left the island with a Human Army spy, only to be captured. In captivity, the assimilated Akane granted him the advanced Salvator-type Fafner Mark Sein, enabling his return to defend Tatsumiyajima.
Piloting Mark Sein accelerated Kazuki's assimilation phenomenon, causing progressive sensory loss and physical deterioration. By 2148, he was nearly blind and partially crippled, clinging to Soushi's promise to return after Soushi's disappearance. Events in the Arctic temporarily reversed Kazuki's assimilation effects, restoring his vision but imposing a strict three-year lifespan limit. During the conflict in Exodus (2150), he accepted a blessing from the Festum Mir Kurusu to save Tatsumiyajima, forfeiting his humanity for enhanced abilities. This granted him powers like counter-assimilating Festum and reversing ally assimilation, but rendered his physical form transient. Overusing these abilities risked disintegration and rebirth at Kurusu's side, further eroding his humanity.
In the Fifth Operation Azure during The Beyond, Kazuki piloted the Mark Zwei Kai "Grimreaper," disappearing after a battle failure and later reappearing on Misao Kurusu's boat. Three years later, he rescued Soushi from a simulated Tatsumiyajima using the Mark Zehn Kai "Achilles," erasing the assimilated Floro despite Soushi's resulting hatred. When Wadatsumijima was overwhelmed, Kazuki transformed Mark Zehn Kai into the ultimate Salvator Model Mark Alles, utilizing its built-in swords. After the conflict, he left the island with Kōyō Kasugai to travel the world.
Kazuki maintained complex relationships. His bond with Soushi remained central, driving actions like launching solo rescue missions and vowing eternal reunion beyond life and death. He found comfort in childhood friend Maya Tōmi and acknowledged Canon Memphis-Hazama's feelings, though he showed no romantic interest. His strained relationship with his father improved over time. Outside combat, he worked at the Rakuen café as an excellent chef, showcasing domestic normalcy amid warfare. Kazuki evolved from a self-doubting pilot to accepting his hybrid existence, prioritizing protection of his home and bonds over conventional humanity.
