His mother, Akane Makabe, assimilated by Festum in 2146, left him under the care of his father, Alvis commander Fumihiko Makabe. During childhood, Kazuki saved Soushi Minashiro from Festum assimilation but accidentally injured Soushi's eye, fostering lasting guilt that fractured their friendship. Initially shielded from the global Festum invasion, Kazuki's peace shattered when Tatsumiyajima was attacked. Reluctantly piloting the Fafner Mark Elf as the island's last defender, he destroyed the Festum but revealed the island's location, accelerating Fafner production and child pilot recruitment.
Captured later by the Neo UN, Kazuki received the powerful Salvator-Type Fafner Mark Sein from his assimilated mother. Prolonged Fafner use inflicted severe assimilation effects: gradual sensory loss, near-total blindness by 2148, and physical decay. Despite this, he fought to protect Tatsumiyajima, especially after Soushi's disappearance, vowing to await his return.
