Description
Kazuki Makabe hails from Tatsumiyajima, a secluded island sanctuary shielding its inhabitants from extraterrestrial Festum. Born in 2131 as part of a genetically engineered generation destined to pilot combat mechs called Fafners, he lived with his father Fumihiko following the earlier assimilation of his mother, Akane, by Festum. Initially sheltered from the global conflict, his peace fractured when Festum attacked the island, forcing his recruitment as a Fafner pilot.
A childhood incident involving a radio exposed Kazuki to Festum influence, causing him to injure his friend Soushi Minashiro's eye. The resulting guilt strained their relationship for years, though Soushi later became his tactical coordinator in battle. Kazuki first piloted the Mark Elf under duress, revealing innate aptitude despite reluctance. His physical capabilities consistently surpassed both peers and adults, excelling effortlessly in endurance and combat training.
As battles intensified, Kazuki briefly deserted Tatsumiyajima, questioning the cost of pilots' lives. Captured by human forces, he encountered his assimilated mother, who provided the advanced Mark Sein Fafner. Piloting the Mark Sein accelerated Kazuki's own assimilation, manifesting as temporary blindness and reddened eyes (though his vision later returned). This unit granted him the unique ability to counter-assimilate Festum and reverse assimilation effects on allies, often accompanied by green crystalline phenomena.
Kazuki operated the Mark Sein until its sealing. During emergencies, he reactivated it, ultimately accepting a "blessing" from the Festum entity Kurusu's Mir. This transformation pushed his physiology further toward Festum, imposing a three-year lifespan limit and progressive sensory loss (taste, smell) linked to Fafner usage. Post-battle, he worked at the Rakuen café, expressing a desire to remain on the island despite his limited time.
During the "Fifth Operation Azure," he piloted the Grimreaper (Mark Zwei Kai), using its power to nullify enemy attacks. After vanishing mid-battle, he reappeared near the North Pole. He later rescued Soushi from a simulated Tatsumiyajima, piloting the Mark Zehn Kai (Achilles). Confrontations followed with Festum-human hybrids like Floro, whom Kazuki erased, deepening Soushi's resentment and triggering hostility from another hybrid, Legato.
In the final battle against the Benon army, Kazuki transformed the Mark Zehn Kai into the Salvator-model Mark Alles. This unit wielded integrated arm-blades for melee and ranged combat, bypassing previous assimilation drawbacks. Post-war, he departed Tatsumiyajima with Kouyou Kasugai to travel the world.
Kazuki is characterized as gentle and kind, yet socially reserved due to his physical superiority. He avoided confrontations and excelled at cooking, managing household duties for his father. His honesty made him a notably poor card player, incapable of bluffing. Deep bonds centered on Soushi and Maya Toomi. His existence embodied the island's dual reality, balancing battlefield trauma with the maintenance of ordinary life.
