Description
Saruhiko Fushimi endured a deeply troubled childhood with parents incapable of love. His father, Niki Fushimi, mockingly named him "Saru" (monkey) at birth and tormented him emotionally, destroying cherished projects like his ant farm research while laughing at his devastation. His mother, Kisa Fushimi, remained cold and indifferent, largely absent due to corporate duties. This abuse left Fushimi withdrawn and scarred, an environment starkly illustrated when his parents ignored his safety during a home burglary.

He first unknowingly encountered Misaki Yata as a child during a bus robbery where Yata protected him. They formally met again in middle school; Fushimi initially rebuffed Yata's persistent friendship attempts but eventually formed an inseparable bond. Persuaded by Yata, he escaped his abusive home, and they lived together, creating a supportive world. During this time, encountering the Red King Mikoto Suoh led them to join HOMRA after being saved from JUNGLE. Fushimi grew disillusioned, viewing HOMRA's activities as a waste of power and feeling increasingly sidelined as Yata shifted his loyalty to Suoh and the clan.

Fushimi defected to Scepter 4, citing HOMRA's lack of strength while harboring a deeper desire to provoke Yata's attention and resentment. He visibly severed ties by burning his HOMRA insignia—a symbol Yata considered "their pride." Within Scepter 4, he rose to third-in-command, respected for his competence despite overt laziness and disdain for social or non-essential duties. He frequently disregarded protocols, employing ruthless methods like drugging civilians for efficiency and attacking former allies when necessary. His relationship with the Blue King, Reisi Munakata, was notably informal; Munakata teased him casually, serving as a tacit paternal figure Fushimi respected but never acknowledged.

Fushimi's personality presents a detached, pessimistic exterior. He views the world as devoid of heroes, emphasizing individual power as the only means of survival. Highly intelligent, he solves complex equations swiftly, enjoys video games, and dislikes vegetables. In combat, especially against Yata, he exhibits cruelty, sadism, and giddy bloodlust, deliberately mimicking his deceased father's mannerisms to incite hatred—a twisted effort to maintain Yata's attention, preferring hostility over indifference. Despite this, he occasionally aided former HOMRA members like Anna Kushina and Tatara Totsuka, revealing underlying, awkwardly expressed kindness. Children and animals inexplicably gravitated toward him, though he outwardly avoided both.

The "Lost Small World" story in "K: Seven Stories" explores Fushimi's middle school experiences with Yata and JUNGLE, confirming his past Jungle app usage driven by peer pressure and fear of alienation. When colleagues like Doumyouji reference his shared history with Yata, Fushimi reacts tersely, internally dismissing his past self as insignificant in Yata's "tiny world," reinforcing his isolation and the fractured friendship that fueled his later actions as an escape from emotional confinement.

His development across media shows unresolved tension with Yata, though they eventually achieve a reluctant coexistence. Fushimi remains active in Scepter 4, balancing his disdain for authority with unwavering effectiveness in his role.
