Description
Nagare Hisui is the Fifth King and the Green King, also known as the Ever-Changing King. He is the founder and leader of the Green Clan, which operates under the name jungle. Nagare is a pale-skinned young man with messy, neck-length dark green hair, and bangs that cover the left side of his face. His eyes were originally both blue, but after awakening as a King, his left eye became filled with green light from his aura. He is often depicted in a teal straitjacket designed to suppress his immense power and is confined to a technologically equipped wheelchair due to a permanent disability. His heart was destroyed in the Kagutsu Crater Incident, and it is now sustained entirely by his aura.
Nagare’s background is defined by the Kagutsu Crater Incident, which occurred during his childhood. He was at a friend’s house when the red Sword of Damocles fell, causing widespread destruction. He was the sole survivor in the immediate area, though debris pierced his chest. He was found by Tenkei Iwafune, and at that moment his powers as the Green King awakened, saving his life. Later, he challenged the Gold King but was defeated, after which he became less directly active and began operating primarily through his clan.
His personality is a blend of a manipulative strategist, an idealistic visionary, and a childlike dreamer. He often treats his subordinates as expendable tools in pursuit of his goals, yet he shows genuine warmth and respect toward his highest-ranked clansmen, the J-Ranks. He considers Tenkei Iwafune a father figure, supports Sukuna Gojo’s enthusiasm for video games, and entrusts major operations to Yukari Mishakuji. He also relies heavily on his green parrot named Kotosaka, through which he channels his consciousness for observation and communication. Nagare speaks in a formal, restrained manner, mirroring the communication style of his family. He harbors no malice and genuinely believes his vision will lead to a better world.
Nagare’s primary motivation is to create a world where every individual possesses freedom and power, accepting the “natural selection” that such a world would entail. He frames his ambitions as though he were playing a game, pursuing them with sincerity and enthusiasm. He admires creative and unorthodox thinking and encourages those who “play the system.” He respects Adolf K. Weismann, the Silver King, above all others and considers him his only superior. Much of his strategy, including the abduction of Anna Kushina, was aimed at locating Weismann and gaining access to the Dresden Slate.
His role in the story is that of a central antagonist and the driving force behind the Green Clan’s operations. He manipulates events from behind the scenes, such as guiding the Colorless King to cause chaos and attempting to assassinate the Blue King to test the mortality of newly awakened Kings. He is also the main figure in the side story Side:Green ~Uwagaki Sekai~, which explores his past and his relationship with Sukuna Gojo.
Nagare’s notable abilities derive from his status as the Green King. He possesses the power of change and transformation, allowing him to alter the laws of matter. He can pass freely through solid objects and greatly enhance his physical capabilities. His aura sustains his damaged heart, functioning as a substitute life force. When he unleashes his full power, his appearance changes dramatically: his hair glows brilliant white, his left eye turns green, his pupils become slit, and his straitjacket shreds to reveal flowing white garments. After the Dresden Slate’s release, his hair remained permanently white, but it returned to its original dark green after the Slate’s destruction. He also uses Kotosaka as a medium for communication and surveillance, projecting his consciousness through the bird.
Throughout the series, Nagare undergoes little personal change in his core beliefs, but his physical state and methods evolve. He becomes more willing to act directly as the climax approaches, and his relationship with his J-Rank clansmen deepens, particularly as he entrusts them with greater responsibilities. His ultimate fate is tied to the destruction of the Dresden Slate, after which his powers and appearance revert to their original state.
