Description
Hotaru Tomoe is introduced as a frail and solitary twelve-year-old girl who becomes a central figure in the third season of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal. She is the daughter of Professor Souichi Tomoe, a misguided scientist who, after a laboratory accident claimed his wife Keiko and left Hotaru on the verge of death, used forbidden experiments to save her. These procedures transformed Hotaru into a cyborg and made her the unwilling host for a parasitic alien entity known as Mistress 9, which was secretly implanted within her. This dark presence is the source of her mysterious seizures and sickly constitution.

In her civilian life, Hotaru is depicted as having a quiet, logical, and formal demeanor. She is often described as reserved, delicate, and seemingly inexpressive, a result of her lonely existence. Because of her strange ailments and occasional involuntary displays of power, she is ostracized by her classmates and has no friends until she meets Chibiusa, the small daughter of Sailor Moon. This newfound friendship becomes her primary motivation, giving her a sense of warmth and normalcy she has never experienced. She is deeply afraid of the dark side within her that she cannot control and struggles to contain her malevolent inclinations to protect those she comes to care for.

Hotaru’s role in the story is defined by the duality of her existence. To the Outer Sailor Guardians, Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna, she is initially a target of fear. They recognize her as the reincarnation of Sailor Saturn, a warrior of immense power associated with destruction, silence, and death, who carries a Silence Glaive capable of annihilating an entire planet. Believing her awakening could spell doom for the Earth, they consider eliminating her. However, this fate is reversed when the entity Mistress 9 fully awakens within her, betraying Hotaru to summon the cosmic horror Pharaoh 90. In the climactic battle, Hotaru’s spirit manages to overpower the parasite, allowing her to fully awaken as Sailor Saturn. Instead of destroying the world, she uses her power to sacrifice herself, taking Pharaoh 90 with her and setting the stage for a new beginning.

Hotaru’s key relationships are the anchors of her development. Her bond with Chibiusa is one of pure affection and mutual protection, giving Hotaru the strength to fight her internal corruption. Following her sacrifice, she is reborn as an infant and subsequently adopted by the very Outer Guardians who once feared her: Haruka Tenoh, Michiru Kaioh, and Setsuna Meiou. In this new life, she calls Haruka papa, and Michiru and Setsuna mama, finding a loving family that marks a stark contrast to her previous loneliness. Having been reborn, her personality shifts dramatically; she becomes a happier, brighter, and more expressive child, although she retains the vast knowledge and memories of her past lives.

As Sailor Saturn, her notable abilities are among the most formidable in the series. She is known as the Guardian of Death and Rebirth, and her primary weapon is the Silence Glaive. Her signature forbidden technique, Death Reborn Revolution, allows her to swing the glaive to bring about total annihilation, though doing so typically costs her own life, after which she is destined to be reborn. She also possesses the ability to create powerful defensive barriers known as Silence Wall, attack with techniques like Silence Glaive Surprise, and, in a reflection of her gentle nature, heal minor wounds in others. Despite her terrifying potential, her development shows a progression from a tragic pawn to a heroic figure who masters her power not for destruction, but to protect the cycle of life and ensure the future of those she loves.
