Description
Nyanko-Sensei, whose true name is Madara, is one of the main protagonists of Natsume's Book of Friends. He is a high-level daiyokai, a powerful spirit whose true form is a great white wolf-like creature capable of flight, but he is almost always seen in the round, pudgy body of a maneki-neko, the traditional beckoning cat statue. His long imprisonment inside a shrine left him trapped in a material form for so long that he grew accustomed to this feline shape, and it is this appearance that leads Takashi Natsume to nickname him Nyanko-Sensei, a playful title roughly meaning Master Kitty-Cat. Because the small cat form is visible to ordinary humans, Natsume is able to pass him off to his guardians as an ordinary pet, even though Nyanko-Sensei fiercely insists that he is not a cat.
The character has a long history as a formidable and respected spirit, and he personally knew Natsume's late maternal grandmother, Reiko, who created the Book of Friends, a collection of names binding many yokai to serve its holder. This past as a mighty yokai stands in sharp contrast to his everyday life as a plump, food-loving domestic cat, and he is sensitive about anyone treating him as a mere animal.
In terms of personality, Nyanko-Sensei is proud, cheerful, loud, and quick-tempered. He often boasts about being noble and great, only to be teased about his looks and habits. He has an immature and playful side, drinking large amounts of sake, stealing Natsume's food, and eating enthusiastically, with a particular fondness for sweets such as dango and manju, as well as shrimp, squid, fish, and other snacks. He is lazy and self-indulgent, yet he also enjoys games and toys meant for cats, despite his protests. His relationship with Natsume is full of bickering and roughhousing, yet the two clearly care for each other underneath all the arguing.
His motivations are initially self-serving. When Natsume accidentally releases him from his seal, Nyanko-Sensei agrees to act as his bodyguard on the condition that the Book of Friends will become his property once Natsume dies. Since the book grants control over the many spirits whose names are recorded in it, it is highly desirable among yokai, and Nyanko-Sensei openly intends to inherit it. At first he is suspicious of Natsume, believing the boy might use the book to control yokai as Reiko once did. Over time, however, his feelings genuinely change, and his care for Natsume grows into something far more personal than a bargain, even though he continues to deny it.
Within the story, Nyanko-Sensei serves as Natsume's self-proclaimed bodyguard, protector, and spiritual advisor. He keeps malicious spirits away, scares off those who would harm Natsume for the Book of Friends, and stands by the young man as he travels to return the names to their original owners. He also acts as a teacher of sorts, offering advice about the supernatural world and occasionally teaching Natsume spells. Added to this is a strong comic role, since his greed, vanity, and fondness for food and alcohol provide much of the series' humor.
His notable abilities reflect his status as a high-level daiyokai. He can transform between his true white wolf form and the small cat form, and he has enough power to battle dangerous spirits and protect Natsume from serious threats. He can fly in his true form, intimidate weaker yokai with his presence, and even take on a human appearance, at times assuming Natsume's own likeness. Despite his complaints, he is reliable in a crisis and willing to put himself in danger for the people he has come to care about.
The character develops gradually over the course of the series. He begins as a grumpy, self-interested guardian who views Natsume mainly as a means to obtain the Book of Friends, but he slowly becomes genuinely attached to him. Where he once kept his distance, he now shows loyalty, protectiveness, and even tenderness, though he tries to hide these feelings behind bravado. For Natsume, who grew up lonely and isolated because of his ability to see spirits, Nyanko-Sensei becomes the first true companion he is able to welcome into his life, and their bond deepens into one of mutual trust, friendship, and quiet affection.
