Leorio Paradinight is a Rookie Hunter and a member of the Zodiacs with the codename Boar. He is currently a medical student studying to become a doctor. A tall, manly-looking, and fairly muscular young man, he has small brown eyes, black hair, and a spiked crew cut. He typically wears a dark blue business suit, black shoes, and tea-shade sunglasses. Despite his mature appearance, he was a teenager at the beginning of the series.
Initially introduced as a selfish narcissist who emphasized material wealth, he eventually revealed that his true dream is to become a doctor to help the poor. He believes all things can be bought and that becoming a Hunter will fund his medical education. Sensitive to disrespect, his real priorities are his friends first, then his dream of becoming a great doctor. He acts as the 'big brother' of the group, often providing comic relief, though his impulsive and brash nature sometimes causes trouble. He possesses a flair for 'straight-talking' through situations. Melody described his heartbeat as the nicest in the city—warm and gentle—and stated he would make a better doctor than a Hunter.
Leorio lost a close friend to a curable illness because he could not afford the surgery. This fuels his aspiration to become a doctor who works pro-bono for those in need. His pursuit of wealth as a Hunter gains a noble justification: funding both his education and medicine for those who cannot pay.
He first appeared aboard the ship to the 287th Hunter Exam, where he, Gon, and Kurapika were unaffected by a brutal storm. After a quarrel with Kurapika, they reconciled when saving a crew member. In Zaban City, en route to the exam site, he attacked an examiner but was stopped by Kurapika; they later exposed a Kiriko disguise, with Leorio praised for his medical skill and confidence.
During the First Phase, he received badge #403 and faced Tonpa's trickery. He struggled in Satotz's marathon but persevered upon remembering his goal. In the Milsy Wetlands, he and others were attacked by Hisoka. Though outmatched, Leorio returned to fight, only to be spared and carried to the next phase.
In the Second Phase, he regained consciousness with no memory of the event. He passed the roast pork test but failed Menchi's sushi challenge. After Netero intervened, he retrieved Spider Eagle eggs and advanced. At Trick Tower, he teamed with Gon, Kurapika, Killua, and Tonpa, navigating deadly challenges and defeating convicts in combat.
After the Chimera Ant invasion and Netero's death, Leorio gained sudden popularity during the Chairman election by striking Ging Freecss with his Remote Punch ability, defending Gon. Though nominated, he supported Ging and was later invited to join the Zodiacs, replacing Ging as Boar.
In Yorknew, he helped Gon earn money through arm-wrestling and aided in confronting the Phantom Troupe, challenging them without Nen to save his friends and calm Kurapika. During the Dark Continent Expedition, he appeared briefly, smiling at a photo from Gon and attempting to contact Kurapika.
In the Hunter Association election, his punch against Ging earned him respect, leading to his Zodiac invitation. He joined the Dark Continent expedition, working in the medical center with Chairman Cheadle. In the Succession Contest Arc, he assisted with Halkenburg's body and supported Kurapika but remained largely with the medical team.
After the Yorknew Arc, he passed his medical exams and learned Nen alone, developing a technique to detect and heal tumors without surgery. Ging noted the complexity of his vibration-based ability, which required deep scientific understanding. Leorio is physically strong, capable of lifting 4 tons and breaking a mafia member's arm. He is streetwise, knowledgeable about the underground, and resourceful in achieving his goals. He helped secure funds for Greed Island, managed auction dealings, gathered intelligence on the Troupe, and de-escalated crises.
As a Zodiac, he works under the Chairman and Vice-Chairman. He currently collaborates with Cheadle, the Dog Zodiac, as his medical mentor. Stress has aged him beyond his years. He began drinking at age 12, despite the legal age being 16.
