Description
Paz, also called Pazu, works as an investigator for Public Security Section 9. Rumors of his prior involvement with multiple Japanese yakuza groups preceded his recruitment, branding him the team's "dirty cop". These allegations about his criminal past circulated among various police circles before he joined Section 9.
Within Section 9, Paz serves as a versatile backup field agent and a jack-of-all-trades. He commonly partners with bomb specialist Borma, offering supplementary mission support. His combat skills feature folding-knife expertise and street fighting, showcasing a practical, improvisational operational style.
Paz displays a cold, detached demeanor and unpredictable behavior. He is known as a chain smoker and a womanizer, a reputation underscored by his first-meeting comment to Major Motoko Kusanagi: "I never sleep with the same woman twice." Though outwardly aloof, he consistently demonstrates loyalty to his Section 9 colleagues.
During the "Individual Eleven" case in *2nd GIG*, Paz confronts his ex-lover, Kaori Kawashima. She had undergone extensive cybernetic modifications to replicate his physical appearance precisely. Obsessed because Paz broke his one-time rule by sleeping with her twice, Kawashima aimed to kill him and take his place. Their conflict escalated into a knife fight between the two identical figures. The survivor's identity remains deliberately ambiguous and unconfirmed. Later, Batou and Motoko discuss the autopsy, with Batou admitting it was "possibly" Paz who survived.
After the incident, Paz continues missions with Section 9 during the Refugee Revolution arc, supporting operations with Borma and Saito. He retains his tactical and supportive role, and his backstory and identity crisis see no further development.
Paz is absent from subsequent franchise entries like *Solid State Society* and the 2017 live-action film, in which another operative replaces him.
