TV-Series
Description
Sebastian Michaelis is a demon bound by a Faustian contract to serve Ciel Phantomhive, the young head of the Phantomhive household. His true form possesses sharp claws, fuchsia irises with slit pupils, dark wings, and multiple eyes, though he usually presents as a tall, pale-skinned human with black hair, red eyes, and black fingernails. The contract mark, a pentagram on the back of his left hand, allows him to locate Ciel when revealed. He wears a precisely tailored butler's uniform bearing the Phantomhive crest on his tie and cuffs, complemented by a silver lapel pin and pocket watch inherited from previous Phantomhive butlers.
Summoned in January 1886 during a cult ritual sacrificing Ciel's twin brother, Sebastian formed the contract drawn by the boy's intense hatred and desire for revenge. The pact demands three conditions: never lie to Ciel, obey all commands, and protect Ciel without betrayal until his revenge concludes. Sebastian's payment is Ciel's soul. After slaughtering the cultists, Sebastian took the name "Sebastian Michaelis"—borrowed from Ciel's deceased dog—and adopted the role of butler as the most suitable form to serve an earl. He rebuilt the burned Phantomhive Manor, instructing Ciel in aristocratic duties while managing the household and its finances.
As a demon, Sebastian wields superhuman abilities: enhanced strength (calculated at 9-A tier from feats like slicing a ship's hull), speed (hypersonic+ reactions, evidenced by bullet-catching), accelerated regeneration, and near-immortality. He masters combat, languages (French, Latin, German, East Franconian), and all domestic duties, executing tasks with preternatural precision. Despite perfect devotion to his butler role, his core nature remains callous and sadistic; he frequently places Ciel in non-fatal danger for amusement and employs ruthless methods like manipulation, deception, and violence to fulfill orders. He strictly adheres to demonic aesthetics, refusing multiple contracts as "inelegant," and views humans as fascinating yet insatiable. He harbors a distinct fondness for cats, once hiding thirteen in his wardrobe, and maintains a mutual animosity toward Grim Reapers.
In the Public School Arc, Sebastian infiltrates Britain's prestigious Weston College as housemaster of Sapphire Owl dormitory while Ciel enrolls as a student. Their mission investigates the disappearance of royal relative Derrick Arden and other students who ceased contact with families. Sebastian handles menial tasks assigned to Ciel, like cleaning dining halls, to preserve Ciel's cover and advance his social standing among prefects. He covertly gathers intelligence on student Maurice Cole, who sabotaged Ciel, by tracking Maurice's activities and interviewing victims of his deceit. Sebastian orchestrates Prince Soma Asman Kadar's enrollment to infiltrate Red House dormitory, leveraging Soma's status to bypass admission rules. During the climax, he aids Ciel in exposing Maurice's schemes by reconstructing shredded evidence and facilitating a phonograph-based surveillance system in an art room.
Across missions—Jack the Ripper investigations, circus infiltrations, luxury liner confrontations—Sebastian balances impeccable service with demonic detachment. He recruits and trains human staff for the Phantomhive household: soldier Baldroy as chef, sniper Mey-Rin as maid, and superhuman experiment Finnian as gardener, though he criticizes their incompetence. His history spans centuries in an alternate dimension, where he "messily sampled" souls before seeking only high-quality ones, leaving him in prolonged starvation. He occasionally reflects on human transience, noting Ciel's lifespan feels like an instant compared to his own.
