TV-Series
Description
Isami Kondō commands the Shinsengumi, rising from peasant roots to leadership. His amiable, compassionate nature shows in warm treatment of subordinates and deep loyalty to lifelong comrades like Toshizō Hijikata and Souji Okita, whom he raised from childhood. Despite his rank, Kondō routinely defers strategic decisions to Hijikata, trusting his organizational judgment while serving as the group’s representative and moral compass.

Kondō displays unwavering idealism and trust, bordering on naivety. This leads him to invite Kashitarō Itō into the Shinsengumi despite ideological clashes, sparking conflict. After Itō’s assassination, Kondō sustains a near-fatal injury in a revenge attack, necessitating prolonged recovery in Osaka. His dedication to the Tokugawa Bakufu intensifies upon receiving a hatamoto title and land grant. Tasked with defending Kōfu Castle during the Boshin War, he initially prioritizes social advancement over tactical realities, dismissing warnings of outdated weapons and insufficient troops. Witnessing catastrophic losses at the Battle of Kōshū-Katsunuma forces him to acknowledge his error, prompting a retreat order.

His narrative culminates in sacrifice. With Shinsengumi headquarters besieged by overwhelming forces, Kondō insists on becoming a decoy to enable Chizuru Yukimura, Hijikata, and others to escape. He overrides Hijikata’s objections by invoking his command authority for the first time, expressing remorse for driving Hijikata to become a Rasetsu—a demonic being with a shortened lifespan. Entrusting Chizuru with Hijikata’s well-being, he surrenders to imperial troops. His capture ends in execution by beheading, later confirmed within the narrative.

In prequel content (Reimeiroku), Kondō’s early leadership challenges emerge. He negotiates with volatile Serizawa Kamo to secure Aizu Domain patronage for the Rōshigumi (Shinsengumi’s precursor), enduring humiliations like apologizing for Serizawa’s arson after a booking error. Hijikata repeatedly admonishes Kondō for excessive deference to Serizawa, urging him to assert equal authority.
