Description
Masao Satō is a five-year-old boy who attends the sunflower class at Futaba Kindergarten in the city of Kasukabe. He is a close friend and classmate of Shinnosuke Nohara and a core member of the Kasukabe Defence Force. Masao has a round face and a shaved head, which often earns him the nickname Onigiri because its shape resembles a rice ball. He is timid, sensitive, and prone to crying, easily frightened by minor provocations or stressful situations. Despite his fearful nature, he possesses a gentle and kind heart, and he deeply cares for his friends. When the situation demands it, Masao can display surprising courage, especially when his friends are in danger or when he feels a strong sense of justice. This hidden bravery is most evident in the film installments, where he sometimes plays a key heroic role.
Masao’s greatest dream is to become a manga artist, and he frequently draws comics, though his work often receives harsh criticism from his peers. He has a long-standing crush on Ai Suotome, a transfer student from a wealthy family, and his affection for her can occasionally override his usual timidity. Within the group dynamic, Masao is often the target of Shin-chan’s teasing and is frequently forced by Nene to participate in her hyper-realistic pretend play, usually cast as a weak and pathetic husband. Despite this, he remains loyal to his friends and rarely holds a grudge. The other members of the Kasukabe Defence Force include the intellectual Kazama and the quiet Bo-chan, with whom Masao shares a strong bond forged through their shared adventures and misadventures.
Over the course of the series, Masao does not undergo a drastic character overhaul, but he gradually shows moments of growth. He occasionally stands up for himself and proves that he can be reliable when it counts, embodying the idea that even a shy person can find strength for the sake of others. His notable abilities include his skill at drawing and a knack for observation, though his physical abilities are unremarkable. Masao's role in the story is that of the sensitive, emotional member of the group, providing a contrast to the more boisterous personalities and serving as a reminder that vulnerability and kindness are valuable traits.
