Movie
Description
Masao Sato is a five-year-old boy in the Sunflower class and a classmate of Shinnosuke Nohara. Sensitive and timid, he cries easily and displays fear in challenging situations, leading to labels like "scaredy-cat" or "crybaby." His shaved head earned him the nickname "Onigiri" (rice ball), occasionally misinterpreted humorously by peers like Shin-chan and Nene Sakurada.
Masao exhibits a fastidious nature, described as a "clean freak" with tendencies bordering on obsessive-compulsive disorder; he enjoys tidying, such as cleaning messes in friends' homes. His hobbies include collecting phone cards and insects, alongside an interest in manga by Usuto Yoshii. He also writes his own manga.
He adores classmate Ai Suotome, behaving like her devoted "puppy" in response to whistles or commands. Ai views him more as a pet than a romantic interest. He previously harbored crushes on Megumi Yamura and an adult woman he observed dressing. His interactions with Nene Sakurada are complex; she frequently coerces him into playing "real house" games, assigning him submissive roles that cause visible apprehension. Despite this, they share a close bond, depicted as spouses in the 2004 movie's alternate storyline.
Within his friend group, Shin-chan is a primary companion, though Shin-chan’s impulsive antics often distress Masao. Toru Kazama and Bo Suzuki typically offer him comfort afterward. Masao is the smallest member of their playgroup, the Kasukabe Defense Organization. In Movie 14 (*Densetsu wo Yobu Odore! Amigo!*), Masao appears in a supporting role during an adventure involving clone replacements and a plot to transform the world into a samba-themed paradise. Across all media, his core traits—timidity, cleanliness, romantic earnestness, and loyalty to friends—remain consistent.
