Description
Masao Sato, a timid five-year-old in the sunflower class, navigates the world with a sensitivity that leaves him quick to tears under teasing or stress, yet flickers of bravery emerge when defending classmates like Ai or Megumi. His shaven head, round as a rice ball, sparks the nickname *Onigiri*—a term wielded with warmth by friends and cruelty by bullies. A self-proclaimed clean freak, he compulsively organizes spaces, even friends’ homes, while nurturing hobbies like phone card collecting, insect studies, and crafting manga influenced by the fictional artist Usuto Yoshii.

Though the smallest member of the Kasukabe Defense Corps, he joins group endeavors with nervous enthusiasm, his efforts often eclipsed by anxious hesitations. His bond with Shin-chan teeters between friendship and envy, fueled by Ai’s admiration for the latter. Nene subjects him to domineering role-play, casting him as a meek spouse, though a film’s alternate reality briefly casts them as equals in a marital dynamic. Ai commands his puppy-like devotion, summoning him with whistles that trigger eager obedience, even as she treats him with detached amusement.

At home, his orderly, obedient nature contrasts his schoolyard struggles. Fleeting crushes on older figures punctuate his loyalties to peers, while friendships with Kazama and Bo offer solace after clashes with Shin-chan or Nene. Within groups, his fragility nudges others toward protectiveness, yet rare flashes of resolve hint at an inner tenacity. Across all portrayals, his core remains unchanged: a boy balancing vulnerability, quiet passions, and unexpected sparks of courage.
