Description
Masao Sato, a five-year-old boy with a round face and shaven head, bears the nickname “Onigiri” for his rice-ball-like appearance. Timid and quick to tears when scared or overwhelmed, he is often labeled a crybaby, yet he surprises others with sporadic bursts of courage in crises—steering buses, defending his feelings, or briefly morphing into a bold, energetic figure with heightened physical prowess.

His meticulous nature borders on obsessive-compulsive, manifesting in rigid cleanliness and organization. He collects phone cards and insects, eagerly sharing these treasures with friends. Aspiring to manga artistry, he practices drawing comics, idolizes Usuto Yoshii, and crafts stories casting bossy peers like Nene Sakurada as villains.

Though viewing Shinnosuke Nohara as a close friend, he harbors envy over Ai Suotome’s crush on Shin-chan. Ai treats him like a pet, a dynamic he endures out of fondness, much to Nene’s irritation. Nene dominates him, enforcing role-play as her “husband,” a dynamic later explored in a 2004 film depicting their adult marriage. While Shin-chan and Nene often provoke his tears, Kazama and Bo regularly console him.

Romantically, he fixates on classmate Megumi Yamura and an unnamed woman he once watched dressing, showcasing his guileless, earnest approach to affection. Fear once drove him to betray Shin-chan, a choice he deeply regrets.

Adulthood transforms him: long-haired, assertive, and short-tempered, he starkly contrasts his timid childhood self, underscoring his capacity for reinvention under pressure. Across narratives, he oscillates between vulnerability and valor, his fears and dreams shaping his relationships and growth.
