Description
Mokona, specifically the black Mokona known as Larg, is one of two small rabbit-like creatures created by the witch Yuuko Ichihara and the legendary magician Clow Reed. Larg was made specifically for the needs of Kimihiro Watanuki, the main human protagonist, and remains in the world of xxxHOLiC alongside Yuuko and Watanuki. In terms of background, Larg is a copy of the original dimensional god Mokona, a powerful being from an earlier era. His counterpart, the white Mokona named Soel, travels with the group from the parallel story of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Larg is not as exuberant as Soel, but he possesses a mischievous and teasing personality. He frequently teams up with Yuuko to invent absurd requests or complicated food orders, adding extra work for the exasperated Watanuki. Larg also enjoys drinking sake and will often join Yuuko in her indulgences, treating her as a drinking companion.
His motivations are simple and playful. He delights in provoking reactions from Watanuki, much as Soel enjoys teasing the warrior Kurogane in the other story. He is loyal to Yuuko and enjoys being near her, and he also likes playing with the twin spirits Maru and Moro. In the story, Larg serves as a vital communication link. His main purpose is to stay in contact with Soel, allowing Yuuko to know the location and status of the other group and to assist them when necessary. He also functions as a teleportation device, able to swallow objects and then have Soel regurgitate them in the other world, and vice versa. This role makes him an essential tool for connecting the two intersecting narratives.
Key relationships include his close bond with Yuuko, whom he treats as a companion in mischief and drinking, and his teasing but affectionate dynamic with Watanuki, who often finds himself the target of Larg and Yuuko's pranks. Larg also interacts with the regular visitors to Yuuko's shop, such as the spirits Maru and Moro. In terms of development, Larg remains a consistent presence throughout the series, serving as both comic relief and a plot device for interdimensional contact. His character does not undergo significant change, but his unwavering role as a messenger and troublemaker solidifies his importance.
Notable abilities include the power to see ghosts, something his white counterpart lacks. He can devour spirits, as seen in certain chapters of the story. The blue earring on his right ear has the ability to seal magical power, in contrast to the red earring on Soel that enhances magic. He can teleport objects between dimensions by swallowing and delivering them through Soel, and he facilitates long-distance communication between the separated groups. His small, round, rabbit-like appearance belies his significant magical origin and function.
