TV-Series
Description
Shuuichi Natori hails from a formerly active exorcist clan that retired as spiritually gifted members dwindled. Born with the ability to see youkai, his family blamed him for misfortunes and disasters, fostering a strained relationship with his father and a pessimistic youth. As a child, he encountered the bound youkai Hiiragi and bandaged her injured hands—an act of kindness starkly contrasting his family's rejection, though he didn't grasp her significance then.
His journey into exorcism started upon learning of a gathering in Ishizuki Valley after exorcist Amasaki was turned away. There, he met Takuma Yousuke, who inspired him to see his spiritual power as a potential force for good, not a curse. At the same event, Seiji Matoba tested attendees by asking the color of a distant kimono; Natori saw dark red, indicating above-average but not exceptional power compared to Matoba. Later, attempting to prove his worth by exorcising a three-horned youkai alone, he failed as Matoba defeated it. This failure deepened his uncertainty, yet he resolved to continue as an exorcist.
As an adult, he balances dual careers as a popular actor and professional exorcist. He leads the revived Natori clan and employs paper-doll manipulation (shikigami) for combat, tracking, and communication. His spiritual power, while not exceptional, is augmented by a lizard-shaped youkai tattoo that moves on his body—a mark visible only to those with strong spiritual perception. This lizard avoids his left leg, hinting at a future sacrifice or loss related to that limb. He commands three shikigami: Sasago, Urihime, and Hiiragi—the same youkai he aided in youth, later saving her from exorcism and binding her to his service.
His relationship with Takashi Natsume forms a core aspect of his development. Initially viewing Natsume as a potential assistant due to their shared sight, their differing approaches to spirits caused friction as Natsume opposed his forceful methods. Over time, Natori grew protective, shielding Natsume from threats like Matoba and warning him about the Book of Friends. He views Natsume as a "precious friend" who "sees the same scenery," reflecting a bond akin to kinship. This relationship gradually softened his stance toward youkai, though he remains pragmatic, using lethal force when necessary while respecting Natsume's pacifism.
His dynamic with Matoba is defined by rivalry and mutual distrust. Though both belong to the exorcist world, Natori conceals Natsume's connection to the Book of Friends from Matoba to prevent exploitation. He occasionally collaborates with Matoba on dangerous cases but remains wary of his motives.
Trivia includes his birthday (November 12), height (175 cm), blood type (A), and a side career as a singer with a single titled "Unloved." His name is romanized as both "Shuuichi" and "Shuichi" in official media.
