Description
Gennosuke Yumi succeeded his mentor, Dr. Juzo Kabuto, as head of the Photon Power Laboratory. He is the father of Sayaka Yumi and became guardian to Juzo's grandchildren, Koji and Shiro Kabuto. A middle-aged man with dark hair and a mustache, he is frequently depicted wearing glasses, though some versions omit them. He typically wears a white lab coat over formal attire for work and a blue suit for other occasions.

A Nobel Prize-winning scientist, he collaborated with Dr. Kabuto on archaeological discoveries of ancient Greek-like ruins and Japanium ore beneath Mount Fuji, leading to breakthroughs in Photonic Energy and Super Alloy Z. In the original Mazinger Z continuity, he designed the peaceful-use robot Aphrodite A for Sayaka, later replacing it with Diana A after Aphrodite's destruction. An alternate continuity shows him modifying the ancient Olympian warrior Zeus's body into the super robot Z Mazinger after Koji Kabuto discovered it during a Dr. Hell attack.

Yumi demonstrates dedication to scientific work and protecting humanity from threats like Dr. Hell and the Mycenae Empire, acting as a strategic advisor who anticipates enemy tactics. However, he exhibits significant flaws in personal relationships, particularly neglecting his daughter Sayaka's emotional needs. He initially restricts her combat role in Aphrodite A, refusing offensive upgrades due to his belief in non-military robotics. In crises, he displays willingness for self-sacrifice, including preparations for suicide to protect the Photon Power Lab's secrets, contrasting with his inconsistent attention to familial duties.

His consistent scientific contributions include overseeing projects like the Jet Scrander for Mazinger Z's flight capabilities and coordinating with other researchers to enhance robotic defenses. He memorizes blueprints and creates spare parts as contingencies. During the Mycenae conflict in Great Mazinger, his role diminishes but he still provides tactical guidance.

In the Shin Mazinger Z: The Impact! reboot, his name is altered to Yanosuke Yumi, integrating him into a broader narrative involving the Kurogane House and expanded mythological elements. This version maintains his position as Photon Power Lab director and introduces connections to other Go Nagai works like Violence Jack through character associations, exploring his involvement in the "Mazinger Army" initiative against amplified threats.

Adaptation changes include being renamed "Dr. Davis" in the Tranzor Z English dub. His fundamental character arc remains focused on balancing scientific ethics with leadership burdens across all official media, without significant personal evolution beyond situational responses to escalating conflicts.
