Description
Yuji Sakai is a Mystes, a special Torch containing the Treasure Tool "Midnight Lost Child" (Reiji Maigo). This tool restores his Power of Existence every midnight, granting him effective immortality. Initially an ordinary high school student in Misaki City, he discovers his true nature after encountering the Flame Haze Shana, who reveals he is already deceased and exists only as a remnant of his former self. This revelation leads him to assist Shana in combating Crimson Denizens, entities that consume human existence.

Physically, Yuji possesses neck-length dark hair (black in novels, dark brown in anime), a fair complexion, and dark brown or dark blue irises. He stands 165 cm tall and typically wears his high school uniform. Following a merger with the powerful Crimson God, the Snake of the Festival, he gains waist-length hair called "Dragon Tail" and armor named "Bakuyagai." After separating from the god, he retains these as transformable equipment, wearing Dragon Tail as a black scarf or bolo tie.

Yuji's personality blends kindness, selflessness, and social empathy – traits that confuse Shana, as Torches typically display selfishness. He prioritizes others' well-being, often to his own detriment, such as volunteering for tasks despite prior commitments. Initially indecisive and oblivious to romantic feelings from Shana and Kazumi Yoshida, he struggles within their love triangle due to fears of disrupting his cherished ordinary life. His analytical mind and calmness under pressure earn allies' respect, enabling strategic combat contributions despite lacking formal training.

After merging with the Snake of the Festival, his personality shifts dramatically: he becomes ruthless, manipulative, and emotionally detached. He cruelly exploits Kazumi's feelings and callously traumatizes Shana during confrontations. Post-separation, guilt over these actions drives him to seek atonement by wandering Xanadu (a coexistence realm he helped create) to educate Denizens. Shana intervenes, rejecting his self-imposed exile and affirming forgiveness, leading to their reconciliation.

In the OVA *Shakugan no Shana SP: Koi to Onsen no Kōgai Gakushū!*, set after Episode 13 of the first season, Yuji participates in a school trip involving temple visits and a hot springs resort. His role centers on typical school activities: he sits between Shana and Kazumi during bus travel, inadvertently intensifying their rivalry. He joins classmates climbing the "Stairs of Marriage," where Shana and Kazumi drag him upward in a comedic conflict. Later, he partakes in hot spring antics and a pillow fight, displaying his normal high school persona amid comedic hijinks involving classmates like Matake Ogata's attempts to confess to Eita Tanaka. The OVA reinforces his obliviousness to romantic tensions and his integration into human social dynamics.

His character arc concludes with a return to protecting Misaki City alongside Shana and accepting her companionship despite past transgressions, symbolizing a restoration of his original idealism tempered by hard-won maturity.
