Description
Shiryû du Dragon, originally named Shiryû, stands as a central protagonist in the Saint Seiya saga. His origins lie among the one hundred orphans gathered by Mitsumasa Kido for potential knighthood. Following selection, he journeyed to the Five Old Peaks of Lushan in China, training rigorously for six years under the Libra Gold Saint, Dohko, known as the Old Master. There, he claimed the Bronze Cloth of the Dragon constellation by demonstrating exceptional mastery, famously reversing the flow of the Lushan waterfall.
During the Galaxian Wars, his fierce battle against Pegasus Seiya resulted in severe damage to both their Cloths. Shiryû sought repairs from Aries Mu in Jamir, sacrificing his own blood to revive them, an act foreshadowing his recurring theme of self-sacrifice. Facing Perseus Algol later, he deliberately blinded himself to negate petrification and save his comrades. Though resigned to permanent blindness, he regained his sight during the Sanctuary battle against Cancer Deathmask by awakening his seventh sense.
In the conflict against Poseidon, Shiryû confronted Marine General Chrysaor Krishna. During this intense fight, he manifested the Excalibur technique—a spiritual inheritance from the repentant Capricorn Gold Saint Shura—allowing him to cut through virtually any substance. He defeated Krishna but permanently lost his eyesight for a second time due to the combat's ferocity.
The Hades arc, specifically the Elysion chapter, marked significant progression. Shiryû awakened his eighth sense, enabling him to enter the Underworld alive. His Dragon Cloth was further empowered by the divine blood of Athena, bestowed by Aries Shion. This enhancement allowed him to traverse the Underworld's depths and reach Elysion. There, alongside fellow Bronze Saints, he faced Hypnos, God of Sleep. His Cloth underwent a final metamorphosis into the Dragon God Cloth during this confrontation, granting the power needed to help defeat both Hypnos and Thanatos, God of Death, and ultimately assist against Hades himself.
Beyond the original saga, Shiryû's story continues in *Saint Seiya Omega*. Settling in Lushan, he married his longtime companion Chunli and fathered a son, Ryūhō. An unspecified accident cost him all five senses, forcing him to relinquish active duty as a Saint and pass the Dragon Cloth to Ryūhō. Though his senses were later restored, he chose for his son to remain the Dragon Saint. During the Pallasite conflict, he participated wearing the Libra Gold Cloth, inherited from Master Dohko.
Shiryû possesses exceptional physical strength, profound wisdom, and a calm demeanor. His signature techniques include the Rozan Shō Ryū Ha (Lushan Rising Dragon), harboring a brief vulnerability near his heart upon execution; the Rozan Hyaku Ryū Ha (Lushan Hundred Dragons); and the forbidden suicide technique, Rozan Kō Ryū Ha (Lushan Ascending Dragon). The Excalibur technique remains a key offensive asset. When his cosmos burns intensely, a distinct dragon-shaped mark manifests on his back; this mark fades as his life force diminishes, serving as a visual indicator of his vitality.
