Genki Saotome is the youngest child of Dr. Saotome, creator of Getter Robo, and the younger brother of Michiru and Tatsuhito Saotome. This places him within the central circle of the Saotome Institute, where he often observes events from the sidelines. An elementary school-aged boy, Genki has dark hair and black eyes. He typically wears a shirt, shorts, and a backwards baseball cap, sometimes with a jacket. His nature is lively and cheerful, though he exhibits a mischievous streak, particularly in teasing his older sister Michiru. He initially held a low opinion of the Getter Team for their perceived lack of teamwork but later warmed to them, forming a strong friendship with the pilot Musashi Tomoe, who affectionately called him "Genki-chan." Throughout the original manga and television series, Genki serves as a supporting character. He is frequently present during conflicts, often alongside his sister, where he attempts to encourage the team or lighten the mood. On occasion, he is caught in enemy traps and requires rescue. His story in the original manga concludes with the implication that he and most of the Saotome Institute staff were absorbed into the Getter Rays during an attack by the Andromeda Country. A significant departure from this portrayal occurs in the OVA series *Getter Robo Armageddon*, where Genki is female. Dr. Saotome concealed this fact, raising her as a boy to protect her. This version experiences profound trauma after witnessing the true circumstances of her sister Michiru's death and then discovering the scene of her father's apparent murder. The combined psychological shock of these events and the cataclysm of "Armageddon" causes her to develop amnesia. To protect her from those seeking vengeance against the Saotome family, the pilot Benkei Kuruma, aware of her true gender, claims she is his daughter and gives her the new identity of Kei Kuruma. Thirteen years later, Kei has grown into a tomboyish and somewhat short-tempered young woman. As a member of a new Getter Team, she pilots the Shin Jaguar, which forms the Shin Getter 2 unit. She fights alongside an artificial human named Go, who is devoted to protecting her after learning her true heritage, and a large, good-natured man named Gai.
